Hi, I am wanting to watch movies on my desktop PC in a different room to what my PC is in. This is what I plan to do.

Buy a 32" 1080p TV

Get a long HDMI cable and connect my PC to my TV - the HDMI cable will need to be 15 meters ( I know you can get them )

My PC is fitted with a HD5770 graphics card, which has a HDMI output.

Am I right in thinking HDMI carries video & audio ?

So will this idea work ( before I go out and buy a TV :) )

ALSO : I may at times use my TV as a second monitor, what would be the resolution of a 32" TV ?

Cheers in advance.

Yes it should work, but you can't just get any cheap HDMI cable. I don't exactly know why (dispersion? someone else can clarify) but you'll need a good cable after 10m.
Also, the resolution on a 1080p TV will be 1080p. Can't be anymore as there's only that many number of pixels physically.

So a 32" TV wont look great close up like a monitor does ?

You could also buy a DLNA equipped TV and stream from your PC either with WiFi or a long ethernet cable.. Samsung LEDs (series 5 and above) support this for example.
Over Wifi works with files up to around 5gb, but above that you get some lag, so a wired connection would be better if you can manage it.

edit: yes, HDMI carries audio and video, if you go that route.

No they won't because the pixel density on monitors is a lot greater and hence looks sharper and more defined. TVs are designed to be viewed from a distance therefore the resolution becomes less of a factor.
I can't imagine viewing a 32" screen up close anyway, far too big (maybe).

Yeah it's all about the ratio of viewing distance to image resolution. 1080p looks sharp up to about 24" from your average computer desk/chair, which is why monitors from HP, Dell, Hazro, Apple etc using the 27" or 30" size use a 2k resolution to maintain clarity/definition without you needing to sit further away.

With a TV the distance between you and the screen is usually meters, so a 32 inch is going to look sharp from about 2m away but not from 50cm. The main problem I've found though (at least from seeing other peopled doing this) is that stuff like text on a computer OS is pretty small, which makes readability on a TV much less clear than on a monitor because you need to get nearer to the screen to read, and then notice how blurry it looks. This is why software designed to be shown on a TV uses a '10 foot UI' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10-foot_user_interface

Also, as long as the long-run HDMI cable you buy has been tested/certified to work at 1080p, then that's all you need. Some really cheap long cables crap out with 1080p and simply won't transmit or give you a screen full of sparkly stuff, but this doesn't mean you need to spend a lot either.

Keep in mind that doing this puts your PC out of commission while you're playing movies etc.

If you're on your own then fine, sounds like a good enough idea, but if you're planning on doing it to watch a movie with your family then maybe something like a WDTV or an Apple TV 2 running XBMC might be a better idea so that you can work on your PC while something else is playing on the TV.

This kind of setup has the added benefit of a better user interface and ease of control with a remote.

Just a thought.
