it seems to work fine if the flash is in manual mode,
but i just wanted to know if there could be any damage to the camera from using older spec electronics?

(not worried about lack of ettl etc, btw)

I've also heard that old flashes on new bodies can fry the electronics due to high voltage in the hot-shoe.

But I've been using a really old flash on my Nikon D40x for over a year and I've never had a problem.

i just had this reply on another forum:
'It's safe to use...it triggers with 4v which is less than the current 580EXII's.'

if anyone can confirm this i would be grateful, will google in meantime.

It's just not an issue with any modern flash that has TTL control, even if the TTL doesn't work with your camera. As soon as there's any camera-to-flash communication it's limited to five volts. The problems are only with ancient manual or auto-only flashes. It's not something you need to waste time worrying about.

thanks for all replies.
i've had this flash sitting in a draw for ages and feel a complete fool now for not using it sooner. just being able to bounce flash off a wall or ceiling is a massive improvement over the pop up flash.
PS i am using uniross 2100 mah hybrid batteries in the 540ez and they are working great. i once tested 2 of these in a compact and took over 300 pix with them. have taken at least 100 so far with the flash.
