Will You Buy Windows 7???

Just noticed the ram cap too, so I might cancel my Home Prem and go for Pro. Another 2 years and 16GB will be the normal. At least by the time the next version of Windows after Windows 7.

Unless you have an i7 or plan to get an i7 system, no point.
As amd and Intel are all dual channel ram. Meaning it is very unlikely for you to get more than 16GB before win8 appears in 3 years.

Again assuming that

a) Win 8 is worth upgrading to
and/or
b) people want to spend more money again in 3 years time
and/or
c) they don't put a similar cap in place in Win 8

It's nice with pro that you do not have to worry about it to be honest.

UPDATE: On the MS Preorder page, the Microsoft store link is now not there anymore, but they have added a new retailer.

a) almost certainly be worth upgrading to, bvista was, xp was. In fact only Me wasn't out of every release they've done.
c) the cap for win8 will be more as tech upgrade. but I expect Win8 HP will have a limit but larger than win7

D) for most people the extra £35 is pointless.

Yeah, thats the thing. Im already running a i7 with 12GB of Ram.

cant see myself using more than 8-16gb of ram in the near future...and in 3 years time im guessing the oem price of a Pro edition wil be quite low anyway so could always upgrade at that point in time?

Another 2 years and 16GB will be the norm.
Utter rubbish.

2GB is the "norm" these days. Yes a lot of us here will have more but that's not the "norm". The "norm" is the average user and what the average box ships with and 2GB is about on the money.

So you reckon this figure will multiply by 8 in the next two years? Why on earth would that happen? It's not like it's gone up 8 fold in the last 2 years.

Whilst some specific applications will benefit from more than 16GB of memory, even the vast majority of enthusiasts will have no need for this amount, let alone normal users.

The norm is what the majority of new computers and laptops come with. These days more and more come with 4GB (3.2~GB) if they're shipping with Vista. Heck my old man's Dell Dimension PC was bought last year and has 4GB in it.

Be a while before 16gb is the norm, and by that time there will be another version of Windows out.

But seriously, what (non business/server situation) needs close to that amount of ram?

this thread has 645 pages of junk in it and the 1st post doesnt have any useful information in, doesnt make sense to force people to read 640 pages?
Then the first post needs editing. We don't need another thread which will just end up going round in the same circles this one is.

For those people who want to run virtualised machines but don't want to make the extra outlay for the Pro version of Windows 7, you can download Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007 for free.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/...02-3199-48a3-afa2-2dc0b40a73b6&displaylang=en

Once installed, create a virtual PC from scratch by using your XP install CD.

The pro version is integrated into the desktop environment and comes with an activated vm of WinXP SP3 though.

Personally I've gone HP as I don't need WinXP mode (I left WinXP behind a long time a go and have no need to go back ;) ) and I can't see myself needing more than 16GB over the next couple of years. The other things missing I can use third parties for.

yeh but think about it most systems (bar i7) have 4 slots. Know there is a few 4Gig sticks out there, but extremely expensive and wont be in most peoples price range until late next year at the erleast (guess work) that having to kits, would take you upto the limit. I is unlikely that 8GB sticks will come out and down to a reasonable price before win8. Thus for most people the limit is fine.

By all means if you ned pro get it, I'm not saying don't. But people buying it simply for the ram limit need to have a good think,

just ordered pro full retail version for £80 delivered, the place selling adds 1 in stock every few mins i think, i was lucky enough to get 1. I could keep it and use it for 2yrs then sell it and i'd get my £80 back by selling it on auction sites:P

Windows licenses hold their value well and with pro version costing £180 or so normally i'd probably make a profit.

I've preordered Home Premium. I hope nothing major is missing from my beta, because the beta builds are Ultimate.

Not sure about the 16GB RAM limit, but if I need more in the future, I'll upgrade to Pro. I reckon it'll be cheaper than £50 to upgrade, in the future, and there's no way I need more than 16GB right now, so I can't justify the extra £50 now.

its not £50 extra, its £80-45 = £35 more. And when these offers have finished home premium retail will be £150 and £220 for professional.

why was this thread closed: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18032091

this thread has 645 pages of junk in it and the 1st post doesnt have any useful information in, doesnt make sense to force people to read 640 pages?

The topic doesnt mention anything of the offer of £45/80 for home premium/pro full versions either.

Well, we all had to read this one too. I suggest the OP of this thread is updated along with the title. A basic summary/faq to get it started atleast until a better one is made could be the below for example:

SUMMARY

Microsoft are doing a "one time" offer from 15th July to August 9th 2009 where by an "individual" can purchase up to three copies of either:

Windows 7 Home Premium RRP £99.99
Windows 7 Professional RRP £49.99

Why should I care?

Because Windows 7 is "what Vista should have been" and is the best OS since XP arguably. It is stable, has great features and support. The Beta testing during the release candidate stages showed how far the product has come and most people are in agreement that it is very good for a variety of reasons.
Additionally, the prices after this offer expires will be going up significantly, and then up again when it is released.

Where can I buy it?

OCUK rules state no competitors can be mentioned or hinted. However, if you go to the microsoft website you can pick up all of the information you require yourself. There are several etailers that are participating with these pre orders. Most seem to be following the RRPs above or are slightly cheaper.

When is it released officially as a final product?

October 22nd 2009

Should I buy Home Premium or Pro?

See image below comparing features. For most people Home Premium will suffice and it is likely that "some" of the features left out of it will have workarounds (hacks) provided. As to the legality of these this is as yet unknown. It is very much open to debate as to whether Pro is worth it so read this thread for ideas.

Is this an upgrade?

No it's a full retail version that you will be shipped. Due to a recent EU ruling, Microsoft have been deemed unfair selling an OS with a browser integrated, and hence in the EU only, these pre orders will be the "E" version (Europe) which will NOT repeat NOT have a browser installed. This means that you will not get Internet Explorer 8 when you install it. You will have to have a browser available offline to install manually, or use FTP etc to obtain it. Not a big issue for most people. Blame the EU legislation.

Do any offers/vouchers work as well on this offer?

You can go via a popular cashback website to get 15% off at the Microsoft store, but etailers are already selling cheaper than this anyway.

How limited is this offer?

It ends on August 9th and has "limited" stock supposedly. Nobody knows really how long you will be able to place successful pre orders.

Is the Microsoft store down?

Yes it has been down since the offer went live for most of the time.

Do I get 32 bit or 64 bit?

You get both. You have the ability to install and use Win 7 in either mode, only having one activated at once with your key.

Can I install this on more than one machine?

No. It is for one machine at a time only. You can move it to other machines as and when you upgrade your hardware with no issues as it is a reail copy and not OEM.

Tell me about family licence?

There is still little info regarding this but there is said to be something in the pipeline to allow up to 3 computers in one household to be involved with a cheaper family licence.

Do I need a legit XP or Vista key to install this?

Although on the Microsoft site it says that you do, this is likely to be because it was cut pasted from the US offer, which WERE indeed upgrade pre-orders supposedly requiring former legit OS licences. This offer would be very very unlikely to require a previous key during installation as is a full retail copy you are getting with this offer.

So do I care about the "E" thing in the title of these pre order copies on etailer websites?

It doesn't matter if it lists it or not, it will be the Europe/UK version.
