Williams revive Renault engine link-up

Interesting.

2 year deal with an option for 2014.

More interesting is the continuation of the rumour that Renault have cash flow problems and won't have Renault engines, but Cosworth next year.

So, Team Lotus-Renault, Williams-Renault, Red Bull Racing-Renault and Lotus-Renault Cosworth :D

[edit]

Also, HRT currently buy Williams gearboxes for the Cosworth, they'll either have to keep their current gearbox, go with this years Williams box or design their own.

How could they let this happen? For a financial management company they have must have really dropped the ball.

The question for Williams is what they are going to do now with gearbox and KERS. They have usually built their own stuff, but the Renault KERS seems quite good, hopefully we will see the innovation similar to Red Bull.

I wonder if the HRT gearbox deal for this year will be carried to next year, with the Williams rear end on the HRT, they might given the other new teams a bit more fight.

Lack of Kubica, car not as fast as expected, losing the Team Lotus courtcase... It all adds up. Rumours were that they asked Group Lotus for an advance to pay the 8 digit Renaultsport bill.

It does give them some interesting choices for KERS. Their Flybrid system or the battery KERS. Each have advantages and disadvantages.

This is good news for them. Nothing against Cosworth, but if they were good, the top teams would be using them. Williams shouldn't have needed to use them.

What is interesting is that Cosworth were the only engine maker to have the 4 engine partner allowance, i think that was the only way they were going to go into F1. Now it is as it should be, similar to the 90s, the cheaper teams have the slower engines and the faster/wealthier teams have the more faster engines.

Suddenly, Williams has become a possibility for certain drivers, good engine, good team, a new management team, a formula that could be hard to ignor for certain drivers that are anxious to leave there teams.

Always loved Williams since 1990, really glad to see they got this deal. Hopefully they can push Mercedes back a row (as they are doing a good job of competing directly depending on the track type etc this year (with imo a far worse engine)

Agree. Cosworth were solid but ultimately not good enough for where Williams are trying to get. The fact that Cosworth supplied a lot of the back of the grid teams was a hint. But then Ferrari have no need for an engine supplier, McLaren use Mercs, so do Mercedes. :p Red Bull and Lotus use Renault so really none of the top teams had vacancies in any way for a Cosworth engine.
