Willl SATA2 harddisk work on a SATA(1) interface ?

Rubbish no they won't!!!!

Unless your drive specifically supports SATA II & I...

In which case its not a "SATA II" drive, its a drive that supports SATA I & II....Do all SATA II drives support SATA I?

My drives will work on SATAI but to get that to work, you need to use a utility to set them at that, and unless you got a SATAII based chipset your stuffed...

SATAII should be backwards compatible with SATA1. All that needs to be does is limiting the faster device to slower speeds so t6hat they can auto-negotiate the rest.

Most drives use jumpers to accomplish this. I know for a fact the uber-popular Barracuda 7200.10s do this. :)

To ensure seamless backward compatibility between SATA 1.5 Gbit/s controllers and SATA 3.0 Gbit/s devices, the latter devices are required to support the original 1.5 Gbit/s rate. In practice, some older SATA controllers do not support SATA speed negotiation, and require that SATA 3.0 Gbit/s peripherals be manually hardlimited to 1.5 Gbit/s with the use of a jumper.
