Wimbledon 2016

There are always people there who just want to put down success.

The media are even worse. Build a person up for months to a year or two then bring them down.

Saying that, are the masses just a reflection of the media hence all the same mentality?

Watson just hit a ridiculous double backhand lob from the baseline and got it smack bang on the line.

Edit: Watson and the dude's she's playing with have won the first set but she's carrying him at the moment.

I think you're wrong, he has passion but when he shows it publicly he either gets slated for it or disbelieved as you just have. As a sportsman he has had more than his fair share of opprobrium come his way for some unguarded or light-hearted comments (c.f. joking to Tim Henman that he'd support anyone but England) so I think it's perfectly understandable he is much more careful about what he says to the media so it can't get twisted.

Fair. He's just boring when he talks is all.

He was visibly crying wtf are you on about?? Not to mention his voice actually cracking in a couple of places

When Fed and Nadal have trouble against Novak, you cant really fault Andy :)

And while its all been one way recently, Andy did beat Novak in the US Final (and the semi of the Olympics) so its not like he hasn't done it before - but yes his record could be better in this regard

Not to mention the Wimbledon '13 final. Djokovic has never taken a set off Murray on grass. Found that astonishing till I read up and they have only played twice on grass :D

As soon as Djok was out you just knew Murray was going to win it.
The field is just so bad at the moment. Its too predictable, congrats to Murray all the same.

What's that got to do with anything? He's a professional tennis player, not a professional raconteur. Makes me laugh how people assume that just because someone is good at a sport it necessarily follows they have to be good at expressing themselves with dozens of microphones and cameras shoved in their face immediately after a tough match. Perhaps try it sometime and see how well you get on.

I thought Murray's post match speech was quite entertaining actually, he's got more of a sense of humour (albeit dry) than people give him credit for. And he deserves some respect for being his own person and not just regurgitating media spin like a lot of media-coached professional sportspeople do.

But the press and public seem to have made their mind up about him long ago and it's stuck no matter what he does. I doubt Murray cares too much anymore. He's probably realises he'll never win those people over and lets his results do the talking.

Speaking of which, I think he played the perfect match today. The favourite maybe, but he still had to go out there and deliver and he did it in style.

Big congrats to Watson, Reid and Whiley too.

Straight sets semi and straight sets final, absolutely no challenge for Murray

Good for him but it seemed a bit free, shame no Djok

Yet when Novak does this he is clinical - how is that fair?

Murray dismantled two of the hardest serving players on the tour on his run to the final, and when he only gave away 4 aces in the whole final compared to 137 in the preceeding 6 games, just shows how good Murray is playing right now.

eh rules...why others don't have them? new york, paris, sydney?

I'd imagine they adopted white for the same reasons as Cricket. White is symbol of purity and one that was played by 'gentleman' and gentleman wanted to wear clean spotless clothes and white shows up every stain so it has to be cleaned afterwards. Also Tennis is a game played in the summer and white may have been chosen as its better at reflecting heat away from the players.

Frankly I couldn't imagine Wimbledon not being played in white, tradition has it's values and allowing players to wear what they want would take away from the occasion IMO.

why everyone playing just in white? it's boring.

They used to be able to wear anything, but there was a controversial incident in the '70s where a German player, Kaiser Manheim (a bit of a journeyman pro), sported a grass-effect full body kit. It was deemed seriously unsportsmanlike, as it made it difficult for opponents to see him.

They insisted on White-only ever since.

I think part of the problem is that he never seems really comfortable having a mic shoved in his face after a match. I've seen him on TV in much more relaxed situations (like A League of Their Own) and he comes across as a genuinely nice, funny bloke.

I'm so happy that he won though. I honestly think that in virtually any other era of tennis, he'd be close to double figures for Slam wins by now. For him to have won as many titles as he has is quite remarkable when he's up against possibly the best ever player in Federer, the best ever clay court player in Nadal, and someone like Djokovic who could easily overtake Federer and be known as the best ever. All 3 of those will go down as 3 of the best 5 tennis players in history, and Murray has pushed them, he's matched them, and on occasion he's beaten them. I don't think any of us would be surprised if he went on to defend his Olympic crown either, or go on to win the US Open next month. Hell, I wouldn't be too surprised if he did both (though I think the heat in Brazil may be too much for him).

Good post, I strongly agree that regardless of final grand slam count he will be considered a great. I actually think Sampras, Agassi and Becker would have really struggled against him.
