I can navigate through the hard drives on my PC (internal and external) using the left mouse button, but as soon as I click right (for a new folder, or to cut and paste for instance) the window locks up and the windows title bar states it is not responding.

Any ideas why?

I am sure I replied to this earlier.
Very odd.

Anyway, are you sure the drives are not in power saving mode?
They've been shut down with timing, and your browsing is being done with existing cache, then when you right click it take s several seconds for the drive to come back online to be written to?

This can happen right after turning the computer on, and there's no guarantee the windows will then wake up. Closing the window with the X appears to result in the desktop resetting, all file explorer windows are closed, the toolbar momentarily blanks, then reverts to an apparantly fresh windows session
