Hey, Basically i built a new system but win7 never seemed to install properly, so i took a 2gb stick out and installed win xp 32 instead. After this was successful i installed windows 7 64 still with 2gb and this seemed to work, i have now put the extra 2gb back in, making 4gb and win7 recognizes this but says only 2gb is usable, do i need to have the 4gb in when i install windows 7, or is there another way around this?

Thanks, Will

Havent got it on the internet yet, I will try just the one stick that is 2nd one i added. The bios only says usable memory 2gb, doesn't mention recognizing 4gb so it may be the 2nd stick i guess, just wouldn't think win 7 would recognize it if it was faulty.

Do you think installing win7 with only 2gb in the system at the time would have some effect, or should it not matter?

Not sure if this is necessary but you could make a note of your BIOS settings, shut down, clear the CMOS and start up again.

You might also take a look at the Win7 boot settings by running Start -> msconfig -> Boot tab -> Advanced options. Specifically, whether the "Maximum memory" option has been enabled.

Start > Run > MSCONFIG > Boot > Advanced Option and then change the total memory to 4096 and then restart.

Worth a try

2nd stick seems to be fine, running with 2gb just using the 2nd stick but it may be the slots of the mb, need to test that next. will also try the msconfig thing + i have just cleared cmos and changed the dram voltage to 1.65265V as 1.65 is recommended and this is the nearest i can get.

Whole pc seems to be messed up lol. Said i had 58GB left in SSD, at the time it said i had 4GB and didnt say anything in brackets such as 2gb usable. But i then changed msconfig to boot with max memory 4096mb, and now after reboot says i have 60.3gb left in SSD and 4gb ram 2.99gb usable this is weird :S

changed msconfig back, seems windows is using the whole 4gb now, well it doesnt say (2.99gb usable) but now i seem to only have 58gb in SSD free, its so strange :)

I suspect Windows might have been adjusting the size of pagefile.sys and/or hiberfil.sys depending on how much RAM was detected / usable.
