For the upgrade of windows 7 do you need to have vista installed or can you just use the key on the vista box? I have the oem vista home premium and i want to go to win 7 home premium

For the upgrade you need either XP or Vista installed and also a Windows 7 key. You can't use the key from Vista to activate Windows 7.

Dam thats a total faff on as its for a new HD, is the upgrade option any more clunky than a normal install of 7?

Depends on how long the system has been running Vista and whats installed.

I upgraded to Win7 on a 8 month old install of Vista and it just didn't feel right. Formatted and done a clean install of Win7 and it flies.

Thanks, another question. Can you change between versions of win 7 by using a different product key? So if you bought home premium and decided later you wanted ultimate, is it just a change of key to 'upgrade' or do you have to do a full re-install over the top?

There is a system in-place in Windows that lets you upgrade to a higher version. No idea whether this means a reinstall or not though.
