I thought I'd see if counter strike was still any fun, after 4-5 years off. Installed everything and went to play but its laggy as hell. (Asus UL30A laptop with Win 7 64 bit.)

I've turned off Aero and updated graphics drivers with no change. Even knocking down the resolution and settings doesn't help.

I remember playing this game on a poor spec Win XP machine so why an earth can't this laptop handle it?

I blame Win 7 primarily, although I'm confused by how to compeltely kill all of the performance sucking features of this damn OS.

What settings are you playing it on?

I can play CSS at around 35 fps on dust2 with around 8 players at lowest settings on my Medion E1311...

If it only has intel on board GFX then that'll be why. Can prolly get it playable on low settings though.

Nobody here will be able to help you :). Past experience shows that such single-minded ignorance cannot be convinced that a problem may lie elsewhere.

As Stooeh said the 'Embedded Intel® GMA X4500MHD' will be the culprite and the CPU really isn't going to cut it either. Its certainly nothing to do with win 7.

Lol.. Gma inboard graphics.. It must be Win7's fault! I'd raise a support ticket with Microsoft asking them why your intel onboard graphics suck.

It's an onboard graphics chipset that isn't made for gaming, it's made to handle DXVA video playback, like the nvidia ION

They're power saving graphics chips, not gaming chips

You can't blame any OS for that to be performing badly in game

Try CS 1.6

Definitely not Windows 7, its fast and stable for pretty much anything. Aero was probably the best feature to turn off, as it requires the most resources. If turning this of doesnt work, along with a cat5 cable, then the problem lies in onboard GPU. Most intel onboard stuff really struggles with any 3d gaming.

Funny how laptop manufactures still put these in, but around 99% of the population dont play games. Your machine is brilliant for windows and apps

Windows 7 is an amazing OS. It hardly drops performance at all.

Go look at your hardware like everyone else has said, before blaming Windows 7!

CSS has been updated recently and now runs much slower - check the Steam forums where many are complaining about it. So the fact it used to work well on a poor spec machine will be because of that.

I know I shouldn't blame win 7, but even the low low specs of this laptop beat anything I used to have.

I am merely making a comparison, it's been played with intel inboard graphics before so I am confuzzled at why performance capabilities have gone backwards.

The update to the source engine might explain a lower frame rate. Have you tried turning off new features like motion blur etc?

Yep, killed all the unnecessary features with no change. Booted up the original 1.6 game and it's the same; super laggy which is frankly ridiculous when it's running on such an ancient gfx engine.

Try running it in XP mode. I had a old game running really badly on 7. Set it to run in XP mode and bang, super fast again.
