Win 7 re-install

Guys - only a quick question...

Need to do a re-installation of Windows 7 due to AHCI not being enabled on the system.

Can I just go into the BIOS, set boot drive to DVD, set AHCI mode, remove all drives bar the OS SSD and re-install windows (clicking the format drive option?)

I don't have to wipe the drive using other software first do I?

Does this sound right to you?

Anything I have missed?

you dont need to wipe the drive no and there is probably a key you press during boot to choose an alternative boot drive. look on the bottom of your post screen

no need to reinstall, I had this very problem,

and do the auto fix, worked for me.

You should be able to change to AHCI mode without reinstalling Windows.

Set AHCI after installing Windows 7

Cheers guys - If the auto fix doesn't work and breaks/corrupts any data (which I'm sure I read about before when the script was edited) I assume I can then just re-install Windows to fix any issues as above

Tried the regedit trick - worked a treat.

SSD speeds are much better now on benchmarking - maybe not what they should be though.

Maybe try different drivers...?

Right - Slight little problem.

Since editing the registry all of my internal drives now show up in the remove device from this computer option (the one you click to safely remove USB's) Any way around this - Only a matter of time before I accidentally remove my C: !?

That has happened to me in the past, don't worry, if you do click it t will come up drive in use (hopefully) so you can't eject the drive.

Check the BIOS settings. You can specify which SATA ports are hot plug and which aren't.

Couldn't find any settings in the BIOS to change so re-installed Windows and the option is still there.

Major facepalm moment and a waste of an hour!!

Seems to boot quicker now though so not a complete waste.

Plan B is to eject any devices from My Computer rather than the tray icon.
