Could be secureboot in the bios... Are you on legacy boot or secure boot ?

I'd suggest doing a fresh install of Windows 7, only install minimal drivers such as Chipset and GPU drivers, then do all the updates and finally upgrade. Might take longer, but it's definitely foolproof.

Hi im on Legacy as far am im aware

and I cannot do a fresh install of windows 7 as id lose everything wouldn't I and I don't have any media to back everything upto

Do you have access to another computer / flash drive? Download the ISO of Win10, change your bios from legacy and make enable secure boot... Boot to the USB flash drive, and just reformat.

Hopefully you have a backup of your userfiles...

HMM i had the same message trying to go from windows 7 -> 10 and I do have 2 monitors plugged in...

might try it again with just 1 plugged in...

update: after unplugging one of my monitors, the update was successful..!

strange, it downloades form the website fine, goes through the full process until It gets to the istalling files screen - I think it says you know with the big clock counter I nthe middle, then just seems to go to the blank screen

I leave the blank screen on for like hours but nothing happens.

so I restart the computer and that's when it gives me the error message.

0xC1900101 - 0x30018 The installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during SYSPREP operation"

 0xC1900101 - 0x30018 - The installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during SYSPREP operation"

I've attempted to install windows 10 half a dozen times now, these are the steps I’ve tried.

1. Changing my location setting to US in all areas apart from Keyboard.
2. Set the update available Registry Key to (1) rather than (2):

No luck..

My next step it to try Andre’s reply to this thread that Sangeeta initially replied to, her reply of which was so very, very helpful…

There’s a great walkthrough written by Andre Da Costa which includes plenty of ‘Do’s’ whilst getting ready to update/fresh install:

If anyone else has had these issues and found a fix or managed to install Win10 go ahead and holla!

Finally!..

So, basically, follow these instructions if you want to upgrade prior to your install date:

If you are very eager to upgrade, tech savvy users with the above message can modify the following registry key to install immediately.
Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

1.Locate the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]

2.It should exist, but if not, create it.

3.Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with Name = "AllowOSUpgrade” (without the quotes), and set the Value = 00000001 (hexadecimal).

Once the registry key is modified, close and reopen the desktop Control Panel, go to Windows Update and check for updates. You should now be able to click the Get Started button to upgrade to Windows 10. Note: Windows 8.1 users must go to the desktop Control Panel, and not the modern Windows Update UI.”

One more fix that seems to be working

1) Access this file location C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and delete everything there. (Note delete only content found there and not the Download folder itself)

2) Open CMD (command prompt) with run as administrator (admin privileges) and run this command: wuauclt.exe /updatenow

The Update Window should pop-up with downloading Windows 10 again, and if your lucky it will be the complete kit this time.
