Win 7 Windows Update not working

I have been away for a few weeks and when I went to check Windows Update it has a Red X / saying check for updates - when I click on this it says it cannot do this as the service in not running - BUT I have checked it and it is! I have also tried the MS "Mr Fixit" - which says it has solved the problem - but it hasn't. I have noticed that there have been no updates since 20th April.

Any ideas please? Thanks.

Option 1 System Update Readiness Tool

Option 2 Repair install

I have tried Option 1 - no effect still WU does not work

NOT ready for Option 2 yet!

Looks like my last installed update was 12th April. nothing since then!

Only updates but uninstalled AVG and Rapport to no effect!

This is what I get:

It is running / restart has no effect.

Just been through a different M/Soft site and run their solution again and now it's working !! All updated now.

I think what he was implying is you may want to explore the possibility malware has disabled it. Unlikely without other side effects, but there's a lot of junk out there that does it.

TDSSKiller & malwarebytes.

Well - Microsoft - but perhaps a different solution to correcting the "Lack of Updating" problem. A bit brain dead going round and round to get it to work!
