Hi guys, went Vista Ultimate 64 bit over the weekend, however i did a few tweaks and now im getting a couple of "errors"

1st strange thing, on boot before i get to the windows splash screen i get some extra text after the post screen..

but then in windows, the task bar should be Black/2tone colour...

but after a while it turns grey and looks more similar to the old windows XP one..

and my Sound just stopped working, like i was mid song on winamp, and it just stopped. No app, or device would output ANY sound and winamp would not continue playing any track.

WMP would play the track but with no sound, winamp just idled which ever track i picked and MPEG's wouldnt output sound either.

i restarted and sound came back, and the taskbar black, but then aftre a few hours of the same, the TaskBar changed colour again and it gived me a "service stopped working" message...

E6600 @ 3.15Ghz
2GB Geil @ 800Mhz
250GB SATA
SATA DVDRW
8800GTX
Audigy ZS2

fresh install, latest drivers installed for all hardware inc mobo etc.

IDE and IDE DMA disabled in Bios so SATA only.

Extra text eh? Hmm, sounds very much like some kind of BIOS hack. They grey task bar is caused by the desktop composition breaking down, possibly due to dodgy memory or drivers. Do you have an overclock? Maybe reduce to stock speeds to see if this improves or increase ram voltage a tad. I had the grey task bar a lot when I first adopted Vista, caused by bad memory.

hmm yea i think it now says like ACPI or whatever but is generally too quick for me to read properly but i think it does that since i used the win 64 bit guide on this forum!

my CPU is overclocked, my ram isnt. its Geil ULL @ 800Mhz 44412 @ 2.2V

but it is "new" ram, so maybe i have to memtest it to make sure its okay?

with regards to the "dodgy drivers" i have an Unknown device in Device manager, coming from my Soundcard, its the Gameport bit, i installed the latest Creatives inc the gameport stuff but it didnt install properly and win cant find a better version online so......

i might try disabling it to see if that helps?

hmm just read;

"I don't think this is the default behavior, though. Power Saver turns the window frames and taskbar grey, which would be fine (it would let me know that it's in Power saver) except it changes back and forth between the new grey taskbar and the default black taskbar depending on whether a window is maximised.
"

i have run this; Turning Hibernation Off:

In the command prompt window, type in the following command:

powercfg -h off
i have run the command in the tips thread to

I have heard that decreasing the memory speed to 667-700 in true BIOS :Dmay help, although this usually only affects 4gb. Do you have two sticks of RAM, perhaps just try one and see how that goes.

If you are getting the grey tool bar, with Aero or Vista basic set, its an error. You should only get the grey tool bar in safe mode. This indicates drivers or services are failing, for whatever reason.
