Hey all,

On my work PC, after ye olde Ctrl+Alt+Del logon prompt, i will, depending on the time of month, get a "Your password will expire in 14 days. Do you want to change it now?" Yes/No prompt.

Is this a server side command? or can i butcher it on my own PC? Anyone have the slightest clue as to where i might find it to change the value? I can't see the point in having a 1 month password duration if it's going to badger you to change it every two weeks. That and for whatever reason you cant use the same password twice, and i'm fast running out of ideas!

(not as bad as our RTM system which disallows us from using the same password that ANYONE ELSE IN THE COMPANY has EVER used. Such a joke!)

Any help appreciated.

if you're on a domain, it'll be a server side rule

you can ask the admins to give you a non-expiring password, whether they will or not is another matter

where i used to work, most of the staff used the month name as their password

Just follow the rules. They are there for a reason. You dont want to cause IT to fail a security audit just because you cant think of a unique password once a month. Try adding a number on the end of a regular password? e.g. squirrel200811

Yeah it's on a domain. It's not that i dont want an expiring password, i just want rid of the annoying pop-up that asks me if i want to change it cause i'm half way to expiry. It asks every day for 2 weeks and i just press No, so it's pointless in being there. Dont see why they can't just have a box on the 30th day saying "password expires today. Type new one now".

And it's not a case of breaking the rules either, but thanks anyways.

It's done by group policy, so no, you won't be able to override it anytime soon...

Unless you drop your PC from the domain... lol

I Have the same thing at my work. Expires every 30 days, and half that time, it nags you it will expire!

If I change my password every time it prompted, I'd be changing it every 2 weeks.

Why, in the year 2008, can we not use one password for everything, or retina scanning or somthing :D Like a lot of people I suspect, I use the same password for most things.

lol

Why don't you just change your password?

I do. I'm merely questioning the inherently pointless application. If you're going to nag people after 14 days, why not set a 14 password expiry? Why bother with pop up after pop up after pop up when you can just make it mandatory to change your password in one go, once a month? or once every 14 days?

Edit: These are rhetorical questions, i dont want answers to them. This thread is pretty much done :)
Edit2: Thanks bledd. for clearing this up in the first reply :)
