Hi,

My bro has a dell studio laptop which has Intel 5100 wifi.
Yesterday I upgraded his Vista x64 to Win7 Ultimate x64. Had some problems getting it to connect to the router for internet access but that was solved with a router firmware update.

Anyway, now on the laptop, when he tries to copy a movie (XviD 700Mb/1.4Gb) over from my shared HDD (which is on my main pc) it starts and then after a few minutes it hangs saying the network drive has been disconnected even though it hasn't. At this point you are still able to surf the net on the laptop.

Strange thing is when it sometimes hangs on downloading the file from my network drive, if I open Mozilla and surf the net it starts back up.

When it starts to download the file its generally downloading at 1.5MBps and then slowly drops and then get the error saying file is unavailable.

Is there any reason why the file would hang whilst being downloaded from the network drive?

Not sure what to suggest mate, I work with a lot of ISO files in work, copying over wireless network in W7

Never had a single problem

Try drivers/bios

Is this over N or G wifi? I can't offer a solution but I suffer from something similar with the same Intel wifi card but mine affects upload not download.

If I try and upload a medium-large file then after ~100MB then I have issues like you state. This only happens with my G access point though, if I'm connected to a N network then it doesn't happen.

(Like you, latest drivers and firmwares all round)

This could be a long shot, but have you moved the router/access point recently?

A few weeks ago I was having similar problems downloading large files over my Wi-Fi, after some head-scratching and doing the usual troubleshooting I noticed my router wasn't in it's usual place. I moved it back and the problem went away.

As trivial as moving the access point a half metre may sound, it did appear to fix my problem.

What about changing the wireless channel? May be suffering some interference?

The thing is my 2 PS3 pick it up fine and so does my phone. The router has stayed in the same position as it always has been. Like i said, it times out but its still able to surf the net at the same time so the connection is still active.
