Have ordered a few copies of Windows 7 Enterprise upgrade from CTXChange (£5 :D), which are Software Assurance copies.

The machines I'm upgrading are on 32 bit Vista but I want to install 64 bit Win7 so I was expecting to be able to boot and do a clean install - possibly just giving it a Vista disk to think about like in the old Windows 95 days.

I can't seem to boot from the DVD though - have tried it on a few machines, they all spend a bit of time whirring and flashing but never boot. The DVD does have "bootmgr" files etc.

So what am I missing? Am I going to have to do a clean install of Vista x64 first?

I know - but should I not be able to do a clean install from the upgrade disk? previous versions have let you do that

you should be able to do a clean install yes.

About a week ago I built a system for a friend and he had win7 Home Premium. Bare in mind this is a brand new system, everything shiny and out of the box, we tried putting the 64 bit on and it wouldn't boot from the disc, it posted and everything, got to reading the disc and asked for a bootable CD to be put in.

Sio after 4 tries, we put the 32 bit disc in instead and what do you know, it booted no problems. We installed the 32 bit because it was a christmas present, we were only testing it and he wasn't allowed to use it until christmas day, so was going to fresh install 7 afterwards.

Turns out though, that after I left he tried the 64 bit again, and after 3 tries, it finally booted from the disc, so it would seem that it is either an underlying problem that both you and he seemed to have, or there is a problem with certain win 7 64 bit discs.

I can't give you a fix, all I can telkl you is that we had the same problem and perseverence was all that fixed it it seemed...very strange issue though

Odd, I tried it with the 32 bit disc (also SA enterprise) and it wouldnt boot either.

It does try to boot, spends a fair while flashing and making noises.

Might just do a clean install of Vista x64 and upgrade from there

that is strange

I suppose the upgrdade thing may work though. However with that said, I upgraded from Vista Ultimate x64 to win 7 ultimate x64 and for the first couple of weeks I had to boot with the disc in the drive, otherwise it was convinced that bootmgr wasn't there, when after those weeks it would boot absolutely fine without the disc in...go figure :p

I have a copy of Windows 7 Professional Upgrade that I bought for £30 as it was a student offer and didn't have any problems with it booting from disc. I also managed to do a clean install without it requesting any previous version of Windows which was nice! As you said you should install it from USB stick if it's giving you any problems. I tested Win 7 on my Netbook and making it into a bootable USB stick is a piece of cake.

Just had the same problem with a 64bit disk will not boot with a new Acer Laptop, but the 32bit one is fine.

Tried the 64bit disk on my HP Laptop and it boots fine - very stange !

Ended up doing an install of Vista x64 that I downloaded from the VLSC site and did the upgrade from there!

Got 3 more to do but I'll probably just image them once I've got all the apps installed
