Win7 - Memory size and usage

I have 3 GB installed but for some reason Win & sees the 3 but brackets only 2Gb can be used. Any one else experienced this and is it fixable?

I am running 64 bit. The 1 gig it does not use but see's are 512MB each diff manufactures.
The 2gig are DC corsair kit. It PC recognises it in post but not OS

Yes, vista ultimate saw it no problems. I think one of the slots might be knackered. if I put one module in the b2 slot system will not post but if I swap them over its fine!!! but still not usable though.

I bought another dual channel kit and exact samr problem, actuallu this time the extra gig is not recognised. I think its a MOBO issue.
