Win7 update problems - fix that works?

Ensure you get all Windows 7 Updating done before Tuesday, October, 8th!

Many thanks for that ED209, it finally worked a treat on two systems. I will pass on the details to people whose systems I support.

While researching this, I noticed that it will ONLY work up until October 7th and that after that, Microsoft are making changes to the update process.
We know for certain this works well for September 2nd Tuesday, known as Patch Tuesday. Which is today, and onwards till October 7th.

You want to ensure you get all your Windows Updating done before the next Patch Tuesday, October, 8. From that point onwards, there will be a very significant change in the way Windows Update works. Some may like it a lot. Some may dislike it intensely.
This change sounds ominous, does anyone here know what it will involve?

I just wondered if anyone knew of a fix for the Windows 7 update issues which seem to plague many, that actually works?
I've got an old HP laptop here. Totally fresh Windows 7 Professional SP1 install. Been through the HP drivers and that is it, nothing else installed.
It was left attempting to update Windows last night:

Checking for updates..
Most recent check for updates: Never
Updates were installed: Never
You receive updates: For Windows only

This is where it has been for the last 12 hours.
I've seen fixes listed. Some involved downloading a file, which itself initiates a "searching for installed updates..." which doesn't seem to end.
Others directed me to a download which when I run I'm told isn't applicable for your machine.

Anyone with a definitive solution to this?

Ta

I've just had this as well. Left my rebuilt pc with fresh windows 7 ultimate install running the update while i was at work, 6+ hours, and came home to find it wasn't doing anything at all! A real pain in the rear as I need sound drivers to run headphones from the mobo + case jacks.

It's how I'm beginning to feel on this laptop at the moment. It's a little bit old and as a work-around I did try Windows 10 on it. Alas so much hardware doesn't seem to be supported, I had to roll back.
So I can either have a laptop that is up to date on security - but loads of "base system" and other items not recognised or I can have a very out of date security wise laptop.
Hummm.

Yep me as well . Sound card didn't work, old software didn't work, windows gadgets didn't work properly ( even this was a gadget hack to run gadgets on win 10) I rolled back and hate Win 10 with a passion. I just want my Win 7 Ultimate to work the way it has always worked....totally fine. All programs and hardware run and work great.

I think you have to register to get updates....bet that is what it is.

I think it's the switch to cumulative updates like windows 10. You can't pick and choose updates any more. It's just one big update for the month.

From how I read the link above, there will only be around 5 update files to download each month instead of multiple updates (updates will be grouped by security, non-security, .net framework, flash for MS browsers and the malicious software removal tool).

After i finally managed to get this months downloaded and installed (took 2 days checking, then 3 hrs to download and install), ive had no problems, as one of the updates is a supposed fix for it (3185911).

My Win 7 Home Premium hasn't updated since mid-September 2016 (updated on 09 September, checked for updates on 12 September, but no indication anything was found). I thought it had been a while, but not that long; doesn't time pass quickly when you're old...

It's supposed to check automatically, but the update history shows the check on 12 Sep was the last. It's not that it takes ages to check and update; it just hasn't been checking at all.

I started a manual check yesterday evening. It's been sitting for twelve hours now 'checking for updates', but doesn't seem to have found anything yet.

Do I just leave it to get on with it, or is there something else I should do now?

Not quite the same problem as before, though; I have no doubt it is connected, but the problem first manifested itself as simply not checking for updates at all, not taking ages to find and download them.

Sorted. It found the updates eventually, and all is now up to date.

I was slightly surprised that the only response I got was effectively "upgrade tor Windows 10", though. Perhaps I should have started a new thread.

Still, all's well that ends well. Masterly inactivity won out in the end...

I never said for You to upgrade to Windows 10 lol , I said ( if you bother reading ) that is what I chose to do because I didnt want to sit around for days on end like a rat in a maze trying to fix something that shouldnt be broken in the first place .

If the implication I imputed to your post was wrong, I apologise.

My computer still functioned normally throughout, just had not been updated since September. I spent one day going around like a rat in a maze - well, my computer did; I just took a look from time to time - and the problem is now sorted. Probably for good, too, if some info I found in other places after getting no response here is accurate; the December rollup pack is now installed, so it's up to date.

Your post did nothing to help, though, did it? I do believe my last line was a question (if you bother reading).
