Win7 update stopped working on 12/12. Any ideas what it is this time?

I have windows update set to check for updates and alert me.

MS broke that a while back (the update icon stopped appearing), but I found a workaround for that problem and it was working again.

I noticed that I hadn't been alerted to the December patch day, so I checked. The last time updates were searched for was 23:45 on 12/12/16. They should be checked daily (and were being up until then).

Doing a manual check for updates results in the usual problem of svchost taking 100% of one core, the "searching for updates" bar being animated...and nothing happening. Again. I found an update to fix the problem last time. I haven't found anything this time.

I don't recall changing anything my end and the last update I had before then was on 18/11, so I'm assuming MS have changed something at their end and broken Win7 updates again.

I was able to download and install the December security patches from the update catalogue, but I'd like to be notified when new security patches are available. Does anyone know of a new reason for WU being broken and a fix for that new reason? Or another way to get notified when a security patch is available?

Microsoft want you off 7 and onto 10, and thats that.

Won't get me on it though, i started getting problems with them when they were pushing Win 10 through it, i managed to get them though still, but when they changed the updates October/November (whenever it was), and i just couldn't get them at all, i just set to never check, and thats that, **** em. :p

You can still get security only (i.e. not including the Microsoft spyware they're so eager to inflict on everyone) patches through the Microsoft Update Catalog(ue). You can't get them through Windows Update any more because MS are so eager to be the world's biggest spyware company that they'll try almost anything to stop their customers avoiding it, but they are apparently required to make security-only patches available for Win 7 and 8 until support ends.

Read carefully, though, because there are two patch bundles each month and they're both labelled as security. One is security only, the other is security plus whatever MS chooses to impose on its customers. They're currently labelled as "Security Only Quality Update" and "Security Monthly Quality Rollup".

You must have DOM storage enabled to use the MS update catalog site, but you no longer need to use IE.

It's a workable solution to getting security patches only, as long as you can find a way to get notification when they are available.
