anyone recommend a good alternative to winamp?

I'm sick of all the unnecessary bloat. I need something that plays my music files. That is all.

(Hate windows media player too, before someone suggests that).

As above, foobar is pretty light.

I use mediamonkey myself. It's not too bad and is somewhere between foobar and winamp I think for bloat. I mainly use it for the library cataloging and instant search though I imagine other players have that by now too.

Where is the bloat?

Change from modern skin to classic skin and disable the library and EQ display.

This is what mine looks like and has been that way for nearly ten years.

Or as bledd said, download Winamp lite. I've used loads of media players like Songbird, foobar etc and I always end up coming back to Winamp.

set your text size to 9

set the equalizer to 70fps (or whatever top is) and thin lines, with fastest falloffs :)

Winamp 2.5e (October 1999) Its what i have always used, ive tried a lot of other programs and nothing as as good IMO. I just use it with the Kenwood TT skin and an output driver for audigy2zs

^why?

latest winamp lite looks the same, and probably a better decoder..

I tried the new lite version, threw a few hundred songs into the playlist window and it took ages to come up with the ID tags (well not ages but i could see them coming up)

With 2.5e I can drag a 10gb folder of music and the filenames all come up instantly. At worst i scroll down and it does a huge block of them.

Whatever suits you best, for me its my trusty 2.5e version i have always used

This behaviour is adjustable in the preferences.

I'm at work atm so unable to 100% check but I think it's one of the options under Titles >> Metadata Reading (one of them will freeze winamp while it loads all the tag data for a folder and then show it all at once instead of displaying the tag data as you scroll down the playlist, this is how I have mine setup at home)

Otherwise you could create a playlist that just instantly loads your files with the tag data
