Hi,
I have recently installed windows 7 32 bit on a spare partition
I cannot get winamp to work , it will load etc BUT when I click on any file
on the playlist to play it nothing happens.
Tried removing and re-installing it etc , but no joy

Can anyone recommend a music player similar to winamp in UI and features

Cheers

Yeah IF you for example have files in playlist that are NOT at the pointed to file location
it will just skip through the playlist until it finds one it can.
So the location is fine , its just it wont play anything :-(

It you are also interested in a more advanced music manager / cd ripper and converter program I would suggest mediamonkey (which I use and personally think is awesome).

Give it a try.

* Organize music and edit tags in your audio library with a powerful, intuitive interface.
* Automatically lookup and tag Album Art and other metadata.
* Manage 50,000+ files in your music collection without bogging down.
* Manage all genres of audio: Rock, Classical, Audiobooks, Comedy, Podcasts, etc.

* Play MP3s and other audio formats, and never again worry about varying volume.
* Record CDs and convert MP3s, M4A, OGG, FLAC and WMA files etc. into other formats.
* Create playlists and let Auto-DJ & Party Mode take care of your party.
* Sync iPhones, iPods, & MP3 players, converting & leveling tracks on-the-fly.
* Plus much more...

I think I might try media monkey I get

Unrecoverable playback error: Access is denied. (0x80070005)

Everytime I try to play something through foobar
BUT mp3's play ok on VLC and also mpc-hc ? weird problem

This means some of those files in your playlist (the ones it skips) are no longer on the associated location that they previously were, perhaps drive letter has changed etc.

Right click one of these file sin the playlist, view info and copy the file location and paste it into the run box from the start menu. If it cannot find it there's your problem and it's not WinAMP's fault.

Thanks for re-iterating what I had put in my post , just to be clear
THIS IS NOT THE PROBLEM

IF I drag a file into the playlist and try to play it NOTHING happens
So its not like it cant access the file or doesnt know where it is,
It just cant seem to start playing them , same happens if I copy the file to the desktop and drop into playlist.

Is that any clearer at describing my problem

If you're happy to spend a long time configuring it exactly how you want because it does take a while then Foobar is fine but winamp could be fixed, sure you have the directsound output plugin selected in the "output" section in options?

Foobar wont work either , apparently reading through a thread is unfashionable these days

Well given this information it's possible you've installed an MP3 codec (possibly as part of a codec pack?) that has taken priority over the default mp3 decoder in Windows - VLC and MPC-HC use the liba codecs for such audio formats and bypass system codecs by default so they'd play them fine.

The thing is , I have not installed ANY codecs on this install

Weird problem indeedy :-(

I'm sure I've had this issue before with winamp on win7 x64 but bggrd if i can remember what the fix was at the moment. :(
Though I am fairly sure it was something simple/obvious once I found it. All I can suggest for now is just double check all your sound settings in Win7 and then Winamp. I think it was something to do with the wrong sound device or output being selected somewhere.

Sorry I can't be any more help but if it comes to me I'll try and post again.

I've seen the problem you're now describing twice, can't drag things into the playlist.

I solved it by closing winamp, then right click shortcut of it, run as admin

Now close it

Next time I opened it (and all times after), it worked fine.

May have restarted inbetween, can't remember...

Thanks for the help guys

BUT

IF you READ my POSTS , you will notice that the information i have put in my posts

states
1. The files are accessable by me (I can run them in vlc etc)
so its NOT a file permissions problem

2. Anyfiles I drop into the playlist will be added to the list correctly.

3. The files SHOW in the playlist I click play and NOTHING happens
its NOT , I will say that again NOT skipping past them as if the file location was wrong.

Does anyone have any ideas ?

Like I said, VLC and MPC-HC/MPC use internal codecs to play files like that sowon't touch the system codecs.

It sounds like a system codec/hardware issue related to sound since you can't play some of these files due to a access error. If it's not permissions based it has to be that really.
