Wind up camping torch

A single 18650 XML torch (£10?) should last a weekend if used intermittently and on low/medium. Being pocket sized rather than lantern sized it will also be a lot more convenient to carry around at a festival (unless you want to stand at the back and not dance?).

Have a look at the Torch thread for recommendations and preferred batteries (always carry a spare)

no idea what this is about, i presume you must have been drunk

Thanks. i was looking for yours but couldnt find it. It looks the as the one I posted actually - just less reviews, although does have a higher rated time for output

10,000,000 fireflies...

;)

are right becaues of the lantern. a good joke! ( :( )

We went camping a few weeks ago in Northampton and someone bought a gazebo - it ended up just being an attraction for flies and bugs. Good job we had it really, it had about 10,000,000 in by sunday!

Gad you enjoyed it, makes it all worthwhile now :)

Still a gimmick and a pain. ;)

A basic gas lamp is less than £20 and will out do windup for ease and light.

look up the Highlander Field Camp Lamp on the auction site, less than £18, gas is about £2.50 a pop and will last a ages.

"You're the crappiest torch I've ever had the misfortune to use. A candle throws out more light than you do. Your mother has sex with fireflies for batteries the hussy"

That lantern is 30 lumen with a 300mAh rechargeable battery (hah hah, no way will that last 6 hours!)
(30 lumens is about the same as a glistening cowpat under faint moonlight, you would seriously be better off striking a match)

Your Nitecore's AA's store about say 1500mAh, on it's lower setting (65 lumens) it should run for 22hours on decent AA's

A 18650 stores around 3000mAh, any XML torch on low will vastly outlast that lantern and should outrun the Nitecore too.

And like Blue said, £15 buys a lot of batteries.

I came into this thread with an open mind. This has won me over. Have no plans to go camping on the horizon but might get one anyway. :)

hurricane lamp, a small one can be had for £8 ish plus a £3 odd bottle of paraffin and that's you set for a month. I have one that I use to read books by [makes me feel all Victorian and that] and that's what you can expect.

protip: if you go for liquid fuel, don't transport it with fuel in, they are not the most leak proof things on the planet

Paraffin lamps are a bit pongy I recall?
I've got a German petrol lamp that is pretty good, although it needs a bit of paraffin to pre-heat the mantle.
Coleman Dual Fuel lamps are the modern equivalent.
I carry my fuel in two little aluminium bottles, Poundshop sell them (£1 :D)

Now all these are really great for camping as they chuck out shed loads of light and heat, but in a festival situation he wouldn't get it through the gate (fuel + crowds = tabloid headlines)
