Wind up camping torch

A 18650 stores around 3000mAh, any XML torch on low will vastly outlast that lantern and should outrun the Nitecore too.

And like Blue said, £15 buys a lot of batteries.

£5 for this - Blackspur Large Paraffin Oil Hurricane/Storm Camping Lantern

How long would a full 'bowl' (whatever its called) of paraffin last in it?

I have the same torch (2 now) for when I got camping and they are excellent. Really impressed.

A lot of people think so. I can only presume the people posting they are rubbish and offer very low light do not have one (and/or just have 2000 lumen torches) - not very handy for sitting around a campsite drunk. It ends in someone spinning it around and losing it or batteries going flat as a fart for when you are 1 day into a 4 day festival

torches start from £8 and they are all pretty much the same, I have a bunch of them that I leave in the car or around the house for emergencies. Trustfire make reasonable/cheap batteries.

8-12 hours

If you really want a lantern, I'd go for that. Canister gas is safer than carrying around liquid fuel in the open. Also vastly brighter/reliable than a 30 lumen toy.

As you already have a Nitecore, I'd just get a spare set of batteries for that. For your mobile, either a spare battery or one of those USB recharge packs for a tenner.
If you hunt around your gf's toiletries you may come across a semi transparent deodorant lid, tape that to the end of your torch and it'll act as a light diffuser making it much more useful inside a tent (same as those hand batons that aircraft ground crew use)

Pick up some chemical glow sticks and leave one in your tent, makes it easier to find it again in the dark :)

I'd rather have the option of a torch with different output levels (800-20 lumens), rather than be stuck with a fixed 30 lumen toy.

btw
30 lumens = 0.5 watts
1 wax candle = 12 lumens

so 30 lumens really is pretty low.

^ genius.

65 lumen for 22 hours + a dry shampoo top (my own unfortunately, not GFs) and a spare back of AAs

(I did try 860 lumens but picking off the cap after 5 seconds it felt very hot, so would probably melt)

65 lumen + cap

The one I posted in the stuff I bought thread is actually pretty good, used it camping this weekend and it was surprisingly powerful, not to mention versatile :)

It also has the added benefit of being able to charge phones via usb (when winding)

How many winds to power my iPhone 5 playing Doom? I would look like pop-eye after 30 minutes!
