I'm back baby!
So I know its difficult to quote rather than estimate without being here and measuring, but I've got a window company here (downstairs speaking to the Mrs while I get the youngest asleep) that have quoted us nearly £10k for 11 windows.

3xbay windows with top openers (one bay window made of 3 units), 1 kitchen window with top opener, one top and bottom opener upstairs for the emergency window, another bay window the same above it, a single top opener in the bathroom and a large 1600x1700 window in the back bedroom with two top openers.

Seems massively excessive. It's £8.4k for C rated and she's pushed them to £9.4k for A rated. He's just about to ring his manager for authorisation to go to £9.1k.

Is this not a huge amount of cash? I was honestly expecting £4.5-5.5k. It's only a 3 bed semi.

What you may find is the issue I had, they count bays as multiple windows. We got a quote last year for a similar number and the bays made up a disproportionate amount of the cost. When I asked why it because they count each as three or four windows.

Yeah they're counting them as separate units, and I can understand that, but it still seems very high. Even then it's 11 windows coming in at not much short of a grand each

What kind of frames?

uPVC or wood? As said, does seem pricey. Avoid the nationals. Try and find some local fitters.

Also, as a thought, anything in the glass? Like leading or plastic strips to divide it up internally? That was adding about 100 pounds a window for us.

The bay windows will be a fair chunk of that price. If you care a bout a piece of paper that says FENSA use one of these companies if not, fit them yourself if your capable or get a reputable builder who will charge about £60 a window. Keep the stickers on the window and get a visit from building control and they will sign off the windows for about £50. The window units are very cheap compared to actual fly by night installers.

Yeah definitely over-priced then!

Just checked how much I paid, we had the 9 windows done at the back of the house - it came to £3.5k and that was a-rated glass. Couple of large windows (1800x1200), one 1000x1200 and the rest smaller.
All except 2 have openers of some form or another.

Well over priced, at tops it should be around £6k if that.;)

Looks like they charging just under 1k a window.

Shop around get other quotes, we had a few before we settled on a fitter.

Safe style guy was chucked out after 20 minutes, he said it would be around £5 to £6k and he never even measured the windows.

Hiya Mate

have a look at my post below
https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=29104307&postcount=15

The one with snug written next to it on the first page is a 4 window 2 side opener in Black upvc (black outside white inside)

The one on the last page the single then the triple then the single is a Bay window. 3 central with 2 side openers and 2 side windows. Again in Black/white Veka C rated

Fitting was extra. But all those windows bar the Bifolds were fitted for £650

I had a very inflated quote from TWS, they were around £9-10k for 8 windows and a new door. Loads of sales B/S tagged on to why the price. Ended up going with Kingfisher from Drighlington, they came in at just over £3k I think it was (think I posted the proper price in another thread which I looked up). May be worth giving them a ring?

Gilly youve got plenty of good advice above but plain white UPVC is dead cheap.

Use the windows at a store such as Wickes as a guide. http://www.wickes.co.uk/Products/Do...VC-Windows+Accessories/uPVC-Windows/c/1000632

I have found that comparable windows from window companies (ordered to size, obviously wickes shelf windows are not much use to most people) come in at broadly the same price, plus cills and trims etc.

For reference i very recently bought:
1*1800*900 4 segment, top opener, both sides opening
2*1200*900 3 segment, top opener, side opening

For £950 delivered, in Rosewood, including cills, vents, trims, brass yale hardware and argon filled (A) tinted glass. In plain white they would have been nearer £700. This was from a local company after a lot of calls to companies all over the country.

Using my wickes example as a comparison, the same three windows from there using their site would have been £737+the extras. So its actually a very good guide IME.

He's just about to ring his manager for authorisation to go to £9.1k.

Classic sales technique.

Had a quote from Anglian once that came out at £25k before any of their discounts. After discounts applied it came down to £14k, a phone call to the manager brought this down to £13k on the day of quoting. They gave me the usual spiel of "this offer wont be on the table tomorrow" to which I actually laughed at the sales guy and told him we shall see.

The area manager then asked to come round after I didn't take up the quote a couple of days later, and decided to drop the quote again this time to £11k.

In the mean time I had had a small local builder who came recommended give me a quote, £9.5k but with full removal of old sash windows and re-plastering of all walls affected. Anglian quote they wanted to box round the old Sash frames...

Another week later and Anglian called again, I told them I wasn't interested any longer due to the other quote I had and they then dropped their own quote to £9k. I still said no to them because they wanted to leave the old (some rotting) window frames in and just cover them with uPVC sheathing, I told them as much on the phone and they couldn't comprehend why I didn't want such a bodge job doing.

Did a little bit of digging, and it turns out the chaps who fitted our windows got them from the same factory that used to supply Anglian before Anglian started making their own frames...

tl:dr

We paid £9.5k for 13 windows and a French door, all windows top and bottom opening, vented, and locking. Full sash window box frame removal, new interior window sills and re-plastering of 7 walls.

Your 11 windows shouldn't come close to this imo.

Thanks all. I told them no and left the wife haggling. They were still here after 9.30 talking about security and putting the puppy dog eyes on, so they were escorted from the premises.

I've just run through an online checker. A rated windows and toughened glass all round comes to (including VAT, survey, installation and warranty) a grand total of:

Code:
Window	size in mm	Style	A rated (top quote)
Living room bay window	1900x1050	Top opener £416.00
	                1900x1050	Top opener £416.00
	                1900x1050	No opener £344.00
Kitchen window 1250x1050	Top opener £360.00
Landing window 1030x550	Flat panel £216.00
3rd bedroom 1600x1050	Dual opener £514.00
2nd bedroom bay window	1900x1050	Top opener £416.00
	                1900x1050	No opener £344.00
	                1900x1050	Top opener £416.00
Master bedroom 1600x1550	x2 top opener £606.00
Bathroom 1200x1000	Top opener £362.00

£4,410.00

I guessed it should be about £4.5k! Third bedroom is a little more as apparently one of them needs to open out fully so that the emergency services can get in.

Some of them really do take the pee and are a total pain in the butt to get rid of, glad you got something cheaper. All you need now is a decent price for fitting them.

That includes fitting! They cover our area too.

Going to get some other quotes first though :)

£4.5k sounds about right. I had 2 x bays, 5 decent sized windows, composite front door and uPVC back door for about the same. All fitted.
