Hi guys, I'm thinking of tinting the Windows on my car purely because I want to have some privacy. My car doesn't have privacy glass and local places charge a lot for the work to be done.

So I'm thinking of doing this myself. I've watched youtube videos and it does seem quite simple if you've prepared it the right way.

Have any of you guys done this yourself and can give a me few pointers?

Yes did do many moons ago my tip would be get someone else to do it, only costs £150 for legal tinting assuming you're not tinting the fronts.

I agree.. Dependant on what car it will cost from £100-150 for the rear window (Can be a REAL pain to get to) and the rear sides/quarterlites. And also please remember that non factory tints forward of the B pillar (Front door windows and windscreen) is illegal.

Pretty sure you can have tints on the front but they have to let a certain amount of light through

You can but what you can have is so little it's taken up by the factory tinting, tinted front windows scream pull me over and give plod an excuse, never give them an excuse ;)

Front window tints are a pet hate of mine. Most factory windows are tinted to about 12% and you're allowed 15% tint IIRC, so any tint you put on there will almost certainly put you over the legal limit. And I do make a point to pull drivers with illegal tints.

im actually thinking of doing this myself. i have just bought a jag XJ sport to add to the fleet and it needs some rear light smoke tints to complete the look.

it is defiantly harder than it looks. but the price of tint is cheap so you can attempt it plenty of times until you are happy with the result.

I was thinking of doing it myself. Normal places around here charge £100 and I think it's too much. Tint film is cheap and the tools used are so as well. If I took my time I reckon I could achieve good results. Might give it a shot.

If you're really that serious the only thing I picked up from the guys that did my Volvo was talc, they spread talcum powder on the outside of window then in reverse cut the film to shape then applied it to the inside, they didn't take the windows out just removed the rubber across the bottom which may involve taking the door card off then applying and winding the window up.

Dust is the killer, any dust will present it self as a little bubble and be a pain, so try and do it in a dust and wind free place say a double garage.

You can get pre cut kits from eBay so you don't have to cut anything.

Use plenty of soapy water then you can slide the film about and won't get any bubbles.

IMHO it will look **** if you do it yourself.
But feel free to prove me wrong - I await the results!

Is this on the Impreza Wagon?

So you flag them down if you think they have illegal tints? Do you carry the testing kit just in case or something?

Pull them over in the normal way with blue lights. If they're obviously illegal than could issue a VDRS or FPN. If they're not completely obvious then I would need to get a traffic unit who will test with a kit. The few times I have dealt with illegal tints, the drivers are well aware they're not legit and it's pretty blatent.

Mine are probably at the limit for the front. Was purchased like this. Not yet been pulled over since having it.
