Windows 10 AU Installed a GPU Driver!!

How is this allowed to happen?

I have an AMD graphic card in my custom built PC. therefore, I have Crimson Software with Driver. I'm usually in control of when to delete and update to the latest AMD Crimson Drivers.

I was horrified to see the other day during a Windows update that a Driver for my card was being downloaded. I couldn't stop the download or it's eventual installation.

This resulted in my Crimson software (The control panel), to get deleted! It just disappeared. I was no longer able to adjust my GPU fan settings or do any game profiles because i no longer had the control panel.

Microsoft simply download and install the basic Drivers which can sometimes be older drivers than the latest one you were currently using.

There is a way you can stop Windows 10 from installing third party Drivers which I did in one of the settings but it still got ignored!

is there a way of stopping this? I want to be in charge of my GPU software and Drivers.
 
There is an option in the advanced system properties but it doesn't seem to work properly any more - mostly just controls whether additional software and icons are downloaded as well as the core driver or not.

Its really bad and I have no idea why so many people just accept it let alone a few that actually defend such a poor decision by MS.

You can sort of control it via the updates history or an external minitool that MS provide but that only temporary stops it until the next new update.
 
If you have pro this was what I was going to do to block update of drivers for specific hardware ID's - that is the theory anyway - but maybe it is the same as what Rroff proposes.

(did not know intel HD graphics had a hardware ID - need to check, it got this and the nvidia driver wrong for me.
if that fails I will get the email address of the MS ceo )
 
Out of curiosity what GPU do you have? I haven't really been keeping up with driver updates with my 7950 and Windows 10 hasn't tried installing GPU drivers over it... yet.
 
The first option doesn't really work any more, the reg tweak used to work (with some caveats) but not tested with AU.

My card is an MSI Radeon R9 390.

The automatic downloaded GPU Driver is the result of Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

You won't even be able to install the latest nVidia/AMD Drivers that are non WHQL for much longer (so I've learnt), such as GPU Driver Hotfixes that are not yet signed because Microsoft are really beginning to crack down on third party Drivers not just for GPUs but other hardware too. They'll be blocked from being installed.

Haven't heard this anywhere. Do you happen to have any sources for this, as that does sound pretty messed up if true.
 
Oddly the tenforum link did not seem to discuss the mechanism in the link I posted - perhaps because it needs gpedit/pro

Then, block all installation of drivers for that hardware ID:

In the start menu, type gpedit.msc and press enter.
Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Device Installation -> Device Installation Restrictions
Double-click on "Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device IDs."
Set this to Enabled.
Click Show, under Options, "Prevent installation of devices that match any of these Device IDs."
Copy-paste the hardware ID from the text file into the Value box.
Click OK until you get back to the Group Policy Editor.

TPM is the AU mechanism which could prevent unsigned drivers

This 10 driver verifier tool maybe helpful to identify bad drivers too.

I came across an article yesterday whilst researching this Driver issue. Sorry, just cannot remember which website otherwise would gladly have posted a link.

Please take my word for it though that I did read that Microsoft are clamping down heavily on unsigned Drivers and that Windows will not allow them to be installed.

Whether that actually happens remains to be seen but the way Microsoft are going lately like their forced Windows 10 on people and forced Windows Updates, I wouldn't be surprised.

I think Microsoft would like us all to do away with desktop PCs and all own simple tablets and mobile phones.

Then you will have to change to a different operating system. Microsoft is now deeply committed to not allowing its users to be in charge of their own PCs. You're still allowed to install most software without Microsoft's permission, but not drivers or software related to drivers (like GPU control centre software). The only direction in which that will change will be more of the same, e.g. Microsoft could at any time stop you installing anything other than stuff from their shop. The main point of Windows 10 is to move control from the user to Microsoft and to spy on the user - that's Microsoft's current business model. It's profitable and complaints about it can be safely ignored, so it's not going to change.

You might find some temporary workaround that will last until Microsoft stops it, but you won't find a solution.
 
Microsoft invents

Starting with new installations of Windows 10, version 1607, the previously defined driver signing rules will be enforced by the Operating System, and Windows 10, version 1607 will not load any new kernel mode drivers which are not signed by the Dev Portal. OS signing enforcement is only for new OS installations; systems upgraded from an earlier OS to Windows 10, version 1607 will not be affected by this change.

I'm on nvidia and the AU has restored all of my drive profiles for my games to stock. All my custom antialiasing bits etc have been reset. Not impressed, M$!
 
I have no idea why so many people are ok with or even defend the direction MS is taking :S I guess it will only change when it affects them directly down the road :|
 
So I just noticed Windows actually did "update" my GPU drivers on the 12th. But Crimson is still present and all my settings are still there, including overclock. Running the 16.6.2 installer (which I last manually installed) shows everything is the same driver version. Only missing thing was AMD settings. Strange...
