Just a few quick questions. Is it safe to allow Microsoft to download the GPU driver as apposed to popping over to nvidia.com and manually installing.

Are there any differences?
Can you still uncheck 3D or HDMI Audio?
Does Windows Update automatically download the latest Geforce Experiance?

How are gamers handling the GPU updates.

Safe? What would Microsoft be doing to them that makes them unsafe?

Windows Update just installs the Base driver, if you want the extras you need to download from nvidia.

You should always get the graphics driver from Nvidia or AMD.

This.

Infact I've disabled the auto-driver download from MS on my main machine as it kept installing Windows Update's own driver, causing issues with my second screen.

Considering they are meant to be the same version I am unsure why.

I would never suggest getting GPU drivers through windows update since M$ might have messed them up and they don't work as they actually should.

My laptop after the windows 8 upgrade is a really good example of why you shouldn't get GPU driver updates through M$ since after I acquired FTL it lagged like a pig using the driver that was installed during the upgrade, but once I reverted back to the original windows 7 driver everything started working as it should.

I've now given up, yesterday I clean installed 4 times from a UEFI usb3 stick with the same result, lock ups generally due to graphic card issues.
Today I tried the upgrade route with a fresh download from Microsoft. I had already installed the latest Geforce drivers.
It went well but eventually locked up and I was only able to boot into safe mode.
It had recognised the GPU OK but there was a problem with the BenQ monitor. Nothing I could do would fix it so I'm back with 7 now.

Even after changing settings in Hardware Installation Settings to stop driver downloads, PC still downloading Nvidia stuff on it's own.

I've noticed this too! Changed the setting to not update/install drivers automatically; removed both Nvidia and Intels Integrated drivers using DDU. All seems good upon restarting, but after a couple of hours of using the computer they seem to re-appear within 'Programmes and Features'
