I've seen this issue quite a lot, but I've never had it where trying to run anything through task manager just kills task manager.

Anyone else seen this issue and have been able to fix it?

Logon into windows, black screen with cursor and that's all.

Seen it a few times - sometimes if you leave it long enough it sorts itself out - or as you should be able to bring up task manager restart holding down shift from there (or on the logon screen before that) and run a repair install when it reboots to "safe mode".

Power down the PC (force shutdown if you have to), make sure all your connections are secure then trying booting into safe mode before doing anything else.. f you're able to boot into sage mode, then restart the system as normal.

edit - see - as above so it must be true :)

You need to force you system to go into windows troubleshooter > Advanced option > then Startup Settings.. or you can select Start up Repair.

To access the recovery environment, turn your computer on and off three times. While booting, make sure you turn off the computer when you see the Windows logo. After the third time, Windows 10 will boot into diagnostics mode
.

Thanks for response.

I can access the recovery environment easy enough, start up repair can't find anything to fix (never had that work anyway haha)

I have a feeling it's just an update that's borked it, but because I can't run anything in normal or safe mode, I'm starting to think it's best to just reprep.

ok, then from the same menu, either go back to a restore pint or go back to a previous build.

Failing that, use the repair from a bootable install disk or USB. When promoted to "Install now", click the repair option underneath instead and follow instructions.

You can download the latest MS OS from the MS website and use Rufus to create your bootable USB drive..

I did think about restore point or going back a previous build, but when I tried couldn't get password to work, even though I can login with it, which I found odd.

I had this recently happen to me, couldn't figure it out for the life of me, pretty much stripped my whole machine down trying to figure it out...……...I never learn...…….sometimes its the simple things, turns out it was just a faulty Display Port cable, its crazy as I could see the bios on my monitor perfectly, and the boot logo, it wasn't until it booted to the desktop that everything went dark.

Should be able to do a repair install from there ("doesn't" remove any files or application settings) unfortunately I'm not at a Windows 10 system at the moment and can't remember the exact steps off the top of my head hence the vague references to safe mode above. That is the only way I've been able to fix it if it doesn't sort itself out by leaving it booted up for a few minutes until stuff like the anti-malware service has done its thing.

This is a different issue - you can still see the mouse pointer and move it around and can usually open task manager but nothing else will work.
