Hi all,

My Mum's laptop stopped booting, so she's sent it to me to look at.

I'm fairly certain that the OS itself is at fault. She has no backups, so I'm keen to fix it.

Here's what I've tried so far:

Macrium reflect to image the drive.
Restored onto another drive (same issue)
Converted to vhd and imported into Hyper-V (same issue)
Her drive in my test laptop (same model, same issue)
My drive in her laptop (works)
chkdsk (no change)
bootrec /fixmbr (no change)
I can't seem to run sfc /scannow as it says it's pending an automatic repair
Safe mode (doesn't boot)

Any ideas?

Install a Linux distro, copy all files on the drive over that you can and then re-install.

I have gotten to the point of hating Windows ******** like this so much that I use Ubuntu now.

It seems to me like you've done everything you can, I can't think of anything else to do. Unless you know an IT specialist this sounds like an issue beyond repair.

Had that on folks PC as well, even got to the stage it would load a basic shell, with little to no GUi, some basic windows shortcuts working, but nothing else.
Eventually formatted and reinstalled.

Well I've rebuilt the laptop now, seems to work well. Still playing with the image I've taken in Hyper V but not getting anywhere.
