I have Windows 7 on my computer but my new laptop has Windows 10 Pro installed and only has Windows 10 drivers on their website so basically I'm stuck with W10 so I will be using Classic Shell to change the layout to look like W7 but is there a way to disable automatic updates on W10?

Luckily you have Win 10 Pro, so it's relatively easy using group policy editor (type "gpedit.msc" at the start menu).

Go tp Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update and double-click "Configure Automatic Updates" in the right-hand pane. The options you see should be self-explanatory.

If you had Win 10 Home AFAIK all you can really do is disable the Windows Update service altogether, re-enabling it temporarily every so often to force a manual update (say after each Patch Tuesday), which is less than ideal.

If I choose the option disabled, it will stop all updates including drivers?

Does anyone know?
Yes it will, but probably not the smartest move to disable updates altogether. At least let it notify you when updates are available, so you can download/install them at your convenience.

If you just want to prevent unwanted driver updates, again it's a group policy setting: gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update, double-click "Do not include drivers with Windows Updates" in the right-hand pane, and enable the policy.

For me, the ability to regain (some sort of) control over updates alone was worth paying the premium for Win10 Pro over Home.

If you edit policies it will disable most stuff but seems some things still get pushed through occasionally (though they might have changed that after the last outcry from business users).

Horrid, horrid implementation.

Isn't it just. :(

That is my contention - yes I could completely remove updates - usually via some kind of hacky way of stripping it out - but that isn't what I want - I still want to be able to check for updates, even be notified if there are critical updates but have FULL control over installing them. There is nothing worse for instance than having a few hours spare on a weekend - booting up your PC to find it jumps into updating and then as so often happens stick on say 17% for 6 hours before completing.

Or as happened to my dad - doing some stuff late at night last minute (needed the next day) before an early start the next day only to have Windows update kick in when he took a break from the PC meaning he had to get up extra early to finish up in time.

I have configured these two policies to prevent automatic updates,

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Configure Automatic Updates > Notify for download and notify for install

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Do not include drivers with Windows Updates > Enable

That should be it or am I missing some?
