Found these symptoms/resolution...may help others

Asus X99-A USB 3.1
Bios 18.01
Boot drive - Samsung 951 m.2
Windows 10 10240.
CSM Disabled

I was reliably getting Bluescreen/'machine check exception' error, during boot.
ONLY happens when 'fast boot' is enabled in the bios AND ‘sata support’ in BIOS is set to ‘boot drive only’.

If I have any sata drives attached on any ports…
And bios is set to ‘fast boot’ and sata support is set to ‘boot drive only’ then most (if not all) of the time the PC will crash during OS boot with ‘Machine Check Exception’ (tested on Windows 10 240).
The one exception to the above rule is if I restart PC, enter bios, then press boot menu and select the normal/only boot device (M.2 SSD), then the pc NEVER crashes during boot. Maybe this is because the act of entering BIOS turns off/interrupts fast boot for that boot?

If I have fast boot ‘disabled’ in BIOS the PC NEVER crashes.

If I have fast boot ‘enabled’ in bios and ‘sata support’ in BIOS set to ‘all harddrives’ then the PC NEVER crashes.

is there a good explanation for these symptoms...or is there a bug in firmware.

Fast Boot Crash

You are not alone! My X99-S has exhibited this exact issue across all bios revisions tested 1103 - 1801.

Previously when using Samsung 850 Pro as boot drive, now when using SM951 NVMe. Tested with various secondary SSD/HDD/DVD drives installed/removed the issue persists no matter what is connected unless it is solely the boot drive and no other SATA devices.
CSM/secure boot state appears to make no difference.
The crash only happens from cold boot and always at the initial windows loading screen. Identical symptoms on Windows 7 Pro 64, 8.1(never used as primary OS but tested) and 10 Pro 64.

If you manage to explain or resolve these symptoms please let me know as my attempts to do so have proven fruitless and was starting to think I may have a faulty board!

Although I thankfully have not suffered these problems - I must admit that I don't actually think fastboot works anyway. I am thinking of disabling mine in the bios. I am sure when I tried fast boot off in the past the machine actually boots faster - go figure.

Interesting to know yours works on the rampage! The speed benefits do seem marginal, it's more that I have a number of drives attached which I was hoping wouldn't have to be initialised at POST.

Daytrader - Yes you certainly do, easily done with Rufus and a flash drive. Essential for using SM951 NVMe as boot drive too.

Also a GOP compatible Vbios is required, or so I believe.
