Windows 10 Gaming Mode

Poor article. Doesn't really explain any great details.

My General thoughts. Its just not going to be worth the hassle to find out. We have the likes of OBS, Shadowplay and ReLive for capture.

Any performance benefits from game mode are going to be minor and not worth the issues with frame times, screen tearing, reduces video/ game options, limited compatibility and overlay issues like we've already seen on Windows Store titles using UWP.

Its not a recorder, it works on all games
What this basically does is turns off everything the OS doesn't need while running a game and therefore gives all the Processing and GPU resources to the full screen application..
On paper its an excellent move by MS how well it works we will after wait and see.

Already uninstalled the stupid Xbox app, even with dvr turned off it seemed to make my games unstable. Uninstalling it fixed 99% of my crashing issues.

insider preview doenst realy have anything in it yet, as said its not just recording etc, it frees up the resources, as well as turning of notifications, so you dont get the pop ups when you get an email or anything else.

it sounds like a great feature and something pretty much everyone has been asking for years.

which makes teh above comments a bit odd, or is it just that MS cannt do anything right in your eyes.

This is a better article.

RPS: Can you give a ballpark on the kind of performance boosts you’ve seen from this so far?

Kevin Gammill: I’ll touch on that a little bit. Yes, is the short answer. Kind of the way I look at it is that any increase is a benefit, without question. Even it’s as low as, say, a 2% increase in framerate, if you’re running a hundred frames per second, I will take those extra two frames per second without question. Two percent is pretty significant when you’re playing your game.

ROFL.

You are required to turn on the Game Bar/ DVR recorder for game mode to work according to that article. Watching the linked video at the end of the embedded video in the article, Microsoft clearly says its for select games only.

Its typical Microsoft. "Our software slows down your gaming. So run another of our apps to slow it down further."

I bet game mode doesn't turn off the resource hog that is Cortana or stop Windows Update interrupting you mid game because important updates are available

You enable the game software you do not need to have the DVR feature enabled. They are two separate features.

It works on all games running in full screen.

Never once had update spoil my game lol

overalys are often the causes of many crashes issues.you ideally want as little as possible running.

the xbox thing is stupid.they just see how everyone wants to be a youtube star or on twitch and trying to make it accessible . nothing wrong with that if it works.

i will just continue to use fraps.which still is simplier and if set up right better than anything ive tried without issues.shadowplay is probably next but still has issues and they starting to bloat it with logins and other crap.

I was looking at my update settings as my windows 10 is set to download and install automatically, but I cant seem to change it to some kind of manual setting so as to check for updates purely by myself , as I dont want it trying to update half way through a round I'm playing in a game .

Just looked and my windows is set too download and install automatically. But I noticed my active hours is a full day 12am to 12pm might explain why mine has never downloaded and installed automatically.

I looked at using that but from memory active hours can only be set to a maximum of 12hrs. In other words you have to give Windows update a minimum of half the day when it can do an update.

That said if you are really keen there are ways round it (registry hack to make network connection be classed as metered etc).

Hopefully someone reports back on this. I get Insider Previews but only do it on my phone, don't really have the time to try previews on my PC as I can't risk it being borked. I'm going to assume it'll affect some games more than others and problably lower resolutions better where the CPU has more of an impact. I can't see there being much difference if the GPU is already constantly running at 100% but who knows - might improve smoothness though.

I doubt this will really do much, the GPU is generally not used for anything other than GPU activated tasks (Games, editing software and such).

This is likely for Memory and CPU, where the OS eats up about 10-20% of the available memory (at least seemingly for me, mind you Chrome eats it up heavily as well) and the CPU isnt wasting too much anyway.

So i really actually don't get the purpose here, unless you absolutely must have a min/maxing for CPU usage?

I bet this feature will be compatible with their Store games only.

Anyone else who wants more lightweight system, should spend 1 hour and clear out all the crap from running on the background like Cortana :)

But that's probably what this will do, disable stuff that's not needed when playing games without the need to perm remove. Modern PC's are so good you really don't gain much by slimming down the software.
It can be enabled for any game apparently - you just configure it yourself until such a time the game devs start enabling "game mode" automatically when you start a game which will probably be all new games from the moment this goes live.
ANy improvement is welcome especially as this is freeeeeee :)
