Hi guys,

Bit of an issue with a PC on a work network not being able to see a certain machine on the network.

Basically there are 2 PC's on this local network that need to access a folder stored a PC purely for the task of hosting a Sage database.

Both PC's were able to see it fine until one of them totally died (PSU fried I think?) We've temporarily moved another PC that wasn't in use to replace it, however this replacement (same model machine) is unable to see the Sage "server".

I've tried making sure all sharing settings are there, which they seem to be - one thing I have noticed however is that the replacement machine is running windows 10 home instead of professional, does anyone know if this could be a cause of the issue?

Cheers!

Jamie

You shouldn't have an issue unless you need to join a domain. You've presumably tried entering the UNC path directly rather than just browsing for it?

The HDD in the dead machine will probably have survived. As you have an identical machine available I'd have swapped the HDDs over to keep you working.

If there are warranty issues then I'd have imaged the drive to a fresh one as a temporary measure.

Win 10 home cannot join a domain. That was a problem I had when I tried to run Windows 2012 Server Edition.

If you know the network path you can just type it into the address bar at the top of an Explorer window.

e.g. \\MYSERVERNAME\MySharePathPart1\MySharePathPart2

You can actually just type \\MYSERVERNAME and hit return to see all of the available shares.

So if there is a PC on the network called SageStorage, what path would I type? Router name\SageStorage?

Beautiful, worked first time - I love you guys! :D

How come doing that works but it doesn't display in network? :s

Are they in the same workgroup? (control panel -> system then under computername, domain and workgroup settings)

there's a ton of other settings in network sharing center -> Advanced Sharing settings, but if you have password protected sharing disabled then i'd start with workgroup name first.

I've only ever used the..

Start, Run, \\servername

..method for finding machines on networks. Browsing for them always seems very hit and miss.

Start, Run is instant :)
