Windows 10 price

About this so called free upgrade. I take it the upgrade we get will only be valid on the computer we use it on and if we move over
to a completely new computer, the upgrade we got will be useless and so we will need to buy a Windows 10 license to use it on
our new computer since the upgrade we got and the installation is only for that device we used it on?

yes.

FYI... the two versions you mentioned are the same ;)

Pre-intalled = OEM ;)

You mean OEM vs Retail.

OEM is *supposedly* tied to the motherboard (although you can still re-license if you have had a failure and replace the motherboard etc or simply use the phone system and tell them it's only installed on one PC :p)
Retail is the one you can officially take with you.

windows 8/8.1 license is more relaxed

windows 8/8.1 oem bought separately can be transferred.

pcs/laptops/tablets with pre installed windows 8/8.1 is non transferable.

I take it if you actually bought Windows 10, then you can use it on as many computers as you like
obviously as long as the previous computer you were using it on has been deactivated?

Or do we now need to purchase a license every time we move to a new computer?

A retail purchased copy of W10 will be transferable.

There's still a lot of unanswered questions on the upgrades though. If I had a retail purchased copy of W8 and updated it to W10 and it then gets tied to that machine I'd be really annoyed.

In reality its probably easier if Microsoft just convert all upgraded keys to the same type of W10 key. The fact an installer can tell what the key stored in a UEFI BIOS is for means that the key itself must contain something that identifies what type of key it is and which version it is.

from what i've read the free upgrade will just be for the life of the device that it first upgraded on

im guessing if you buy the windows 10 oem that'll l be transferable, just like windows 8/8.1 oem...

I guess the free upgrade is completely useless for those that upgrade their computer like every year or so. Is more
for those people that don't intend to move to another computer or change motherboards for some years.

If Windows 10 does end up being good, I wonder how many people will just decide to purchase a
licensed retail copy instead of using the free upgrade due to the limitations.

Me personally, I don't like those limitations and so I will most likely just purchase a copy if I like it.

I think ultimately Microsoft are aiming to wean us all to the cloud, no more OS installed localy, everything done remotely through the internet, including your files and documents storage.
