Having troubles updating windows. For some reason windows update has stopped working it seems the last successful update was on the 30th of August everything else from that point has failed and some before.

No idea why it has happened but i have tried all sorts including following Microsoft troubleshooting advice but nothing has worked. Any ideas? Yesterday I activated my free 3 month game subscription but I'm unable to download and install any games because Windows 10 is pants and doesn't want to work properly.

Any ideas is welcome.

Run a full system clean up via disk -> properties -> general -> disk clean up -> clean up system files. Select everything except downloads and the recycle bin (if you want to keep the contents of those).

That often seems to get over any misbehaving updates.

Tried the above advice but it hasn’t worked for me unfortunately.

Currently have a level 2 Microsoft tech guy trying all the things I already have lol. The one before him stated that I’m only on windows build 1709 and that maybe the issue at which point I told him it hasn’t updated because it won’t update lol.

He thinks he may have to do a custom install which will wipe all my applications :(. I’m not very impressed with windows 10

What happens if you download the latest update image using the Microsoft Update Assistant and then try updating direct from that from within Windows?

I'm guessing you might have already tried these commands, if not try them in a command prompt window:
Code:
sfc /scannow
dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

You may have to use the media creation tool and update that way - personally I find Windows update in 10 very poor I'm trying to update a laptop for someone right now but because it hasn't been used for about 18 months or so Windows update and Windows defender/anti-malware service seem to be conflicting preventing either from updating properly with no built in functionality to override them and very slow to do anything due to the heavy constant CPU use from their backend services.

Windows 10 was really good when it was first released, but after some of those "feature" updates it's just getting more and more bloated and unstable. I keep getting intermittent random BSODs on it and I think it started after one of the big updates :/

I might install the base LTSC version instead tbh and just never update it.

Stop the WU service, then delete (or move - your choice) the contents of C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution - reboot and run a WU again :)

I’ll try that I’m not sure if the Microsoft tech has already tried that.

It seems my problem caused the techs to tap out and their only solution was to reinstall windows 10 which will the 3rd time I’ve had to do so in as many months.

Media creation doesn’t work it’s gets so far then just sticks on 46% and will do no more.

Didn’t work for me or the tech guy. Whatever issue I have they couldn’t solve it and instead just want to reinstall windows.

You can normally turn them off.

You must disable the WU service first
I got that part i’ll try deleting the contents a second but no expecting much I have now been told that the only solution is yet another windows install. I’m umming and arring whether to just go back to 7 as really do prefer that to 10.

The contents.
Well it has deleted all except Datastore, Download and Reporting events text document.

I take it I need to restart the pc then try again?

Ok so that hasn’t worked either it seems windows update has broken itself in such a way that the only fix is a reinstall. Doesn’t fill me with confidence that this won’t happen again a couple of months down the line.
