Need help please - Win 10 system restart.

Whenever I select the Restart option from the Start menu the computer goes through its normal shut down procedure but instead of restarting when it should, it shuts down completely. The Shutdown option works correctly.

When I install a new program/drivers or windows updates it’s the same thing when trying to restart, the pc shuts down and I have to manually press the power button to get the pc to restart.

"not sure if this helps but this is on a completely new build pc - all new components & software"

I know it sounds daft, but have you checked in the device manager, and updated your system to the latest BIOS?
An outdated BIOS can cause all sorts of funky things.

Would you be able to list the rest of the specs for the said system?

Hi russell664

Every time I install a new program or driver & I get a prompt for a system restart... I click it & the system shuts down ok but will not restart?

No I will try this when I get home from work... thank you :)

What exactly will SFC /SCANNOW do? I'm not so good on software issues.

The new build runs perfect stress tested and all. Just this little problem to sort out :p

Hmm maybe worth checking you have plugged the little pins in to the right sockets on the motherboard that control the shutdown/startup/ etc...

That would have been my first thought but isn't doing it through windows different to pressing the restart button on the case?

Try removing some components which are not necessarily required like the sound card and maybe limit RAM to 1pc. Do this one component at a time.
Then try reboot and see if it reboots or shuts down.

Try holding shift when you click restart. Does this work.

If not, you will then be booting into recovery and can enter Safe Mode. See if restart works in Safe Mode.

Have you made sure to install all chipset drivers for the motherboard? A lot of new boards have extra drivers which might help control the power system, and if you are missing something it might misinterpret the restart command.

Thank you for your support & advice.

The scan showed corrupt files - partition, I ended up doing a complete windows 10 reinstall as the repair would not work.

New build now working as it should.

Thank you all again :)
