So bought OH a new laptop recently and having g a few issues with it. This is actual fact the second laptop as original o e de eloped same issue.

Laptop runs windows 10 and after a week or so it will grind to an almost complete halt. Open ip task manager and the disk is permanently at 100% usage with the occasional dip to more reasonable usage for a few minutes where it runs perfectly. Ha e already sent one back thinking HDD failure after doing a clean install of windows which solves problem for a few days. Received new laptop and a few days later the same issue. 100% disk usage and clean install only working for a few days

Part of me is saying send it back as it's another HDD failure but then the other parts says it must be software related as the chances of 2 HDD failures is slim.

Any suggestions here would be greatly received. Only other software on it is avast, chrome and ms office 2007

Under the tab "performance" tab in task manager there is a resource monitor button, click this and go to the "Disk" tab on the next screen.

in there it should display the file\program\service using all the disk usage.

install processexplorer find out what the process is creating the high io rate on the hdd or, using the cpu ; look at the stack trace of that and then google it or post it here. [maybe you can do this with task browser too but imhop this is better]
can set it running and allow it to create a graph showing changing loading of cpu or a particular processes cpu use.

When you clean install are you using a verified public .iso image or are you using a restore image from the laptop manufacturer?

Otherwise, if it's not hardware it could be a dodgy driver. Are you using Windows Update for drivers or installing them from the manufacturer website?

[Changed title and moved to Window as you might get a better response]

Thanks Huddy :)

Would appear to be avast, though a suggestion I have been given is to disable windows tips and lock screen notifcations. they don't get used anyway and this seems to have solved the issue

If it hasn't cured it and it turns out it is avast any decent recommendations for av that aren't going to be punishing the drive all the time. Seems odd that it would be avast though as never had problems like it before and use it on my main rig as well.

Clean install from public .iso and using drivers from WU as they are more up to date than the ones on Asus' website. Also checked drivers versions on driver vendor's website. i.e Realtek's website for sound drivers

Awhile back I was getting a lot of a certain laptop returned because after a couple of hours from new Norton would kick in and spend 24+ hours doing a full scan rendering the entire laptop completely unusable so people assumed they were broke - have to wonder how the manufacturer never tested/discovered/realised how much of an issue that would be :S

The other possibility with 10 is that its updating - at some point after a reinstall it will automatically check and start updating to the latest updates of its own accord using a lot of CPU and disc time during the process.
