Windows 11 - Main Drive folders defaulting to Read Only

I have a strange occurrence that's started in the last few days.

All the folders and contents on my main drive appear to be defaulting to read only. Whats made me notice is that none of my steam, epic, gog games will update automatically now as they return with various errors about permissions.

I can right click on any particular folder and de-select read only, but that doesn't seem effective. I've also in all folder properties tried changing the security settings to allow all access to all user accounts. This doesn't seem to have any effect either.

Does anyone else recognise this? I've not come across it before.

What kind of drive is it? If its a SSD then it is possibly worth checking the drive health incase it's starting to fail over to read only

In the security centre, go to virus protection and then ransomware protection, there's a feature called controlled folder access and it sounds like it has been enabled.
