Windows 11 release v22H2 available now. Time to upgrade yet?

I can get it for free I think. Any reason not to upgrade at this point?

Getting tired of all the background updates and app updates on Windows 10.

What's to like about Windows 11?

Will I lose anything (files or installed programs) if I upgrade from 10 to 11?

What programs / drivers don't work on Win 11?

I'll do a system image backup of my Windows 10 installation drive. I don't have the time /willingness to reinstall all of my software...

Everything seems fine as far as I can tell. Only thing that surprised me a bit was the location of the start menu (now in the centre of the taskbar). The OS appears to be very similar to Windows 10 in most ways. It's not obvious that any of the drivers used are even different to Windows 10.

The shortcut for the task manager is now control+shift and escape...

I quite like it actually. The only thing I didn't like was that there is no option to disable combining taskbar icons, but I found a program called 'Explorer Patcher' that allows this to be changed.

A Windows 11 update scrambled my Windows 11 install ('scan /sfcnow' detected corrupt files). I restarted and was getting BSODs on boot, at this point I had to rollback to Windows 10 (using the rollback to a previous version of Windows option in the recovery environment).

Then I tried again, and this time I was able to get all the updates installed this time, but the cumulative update for 22H2 had to be installed manually. Maybe better for most to wait until Windows 11 22H2 is offered though Windows update (I forced an update to Windows 11 22H2). All seems fine now though.

Did anyone find that minimum framerates were lower in some games on Windows 11?

The toughest game to run I have is Assassin's Creed Odyssey, was getting ~50 minimum FPS in Windows 10.

Now, I'm getting 40 or less minimum FPS running the same in game benchmark, on Windows 11 (Nvidia graphics drivers were updated). VBS already seems to be off on my PC.

Maybe the graphics drivers aren't as mature on Windows 11?

Thanks for getting back to me so early in the morning!

It was my fault this time, something had set the game's preset to Ultra High.

Now getting ~52 FPS minimum in the benchmark, with the Preset on Medium (texture + character detail settings at max).

In general, I think it's a very tough game to run well. I've heard that AC: Valhalla is much better optimised, partly due to the game supporting DX12.

There's a lot of CPU spikes in AC: Odyssey, regardless of the settings used. I suppose this is one game that will benefit from an upgrade to a Golden Cove or Zen 4 CPU...

Maybe higher memory bandwidth from using DDR5 would be helpful too?

Cyberpunk optimization was OK on release and with patches (can get good framerates by reducing settings, configuring DLSS etc), RT in general though is very tough for even the best cards these days (apparently that is going to change with next gen cards though.)

I have yet to play either AC game I have to say!
I'm not much of a fan of the AC series, I think I liked the idea /potential of the 1st game, but I wanted something more realistic and difficult (finely tuned combat mechanics etc), don't like how much Ubisoft focus on AC games being a simulation.

Still, I give the latest game a go every now and then, just to see how my PC handles it, and if I can get into the game.

You can get some AC games on Gamepass now, so I'm willing to try them if they cost almost nothing...

AC game engines seem to mostly be optimized for 30 FPS, probably due to the CPU limitations on consoles. I think you need quite a beefy PC to get minimums of 60 or higher on the last few games (except Valhalla).

Is it likely that I will be able to upgrade from my whole PC, and use the same SSD + Windows 11 install with all my files intact?

This worked for me on Windows 10 (4770K to 10700KF).

I'm considering upgrading to Zen 4, probably at some point in October, is an Intel to AMD upgrade possible?

It's impressive to be honest when you connect an SSD from another PC and everything still works after Windows reconfigures itself.

Are people already on Windows 11 being offered the upgrade via Windows Update yet?

I was of the impression you should get it now if you manually check for updates but nothing being offered yet.
I would advise waiting until Windows update says Windows 11 22H2 is available.

Some PCs are still only being offered Windows 11 via win update (like my desktop PC).

Are people just upgrading the OS and leaving old drivers on.
This is actually all you have to do these days. Windows 11 is very similar to Windows 10, they are technically both Windows NT v10.

All I've done so far is update the graphics drivers.

Definitely update your BIOS though, especially if win 11 support added.

Edit - There's an 'INF driver' update for Win11, for my ASRock motherboard, suppose I should install that too?

So, uninstall geforce experience for now, or update to the beta version.

Do I actually need geforce experience for anything? except maybe for recording videos.

MSI afterburner has better overclocking and undervolting capabilities.

True, probably not needed right now. Microsoft has said it will be required to support extra features coming to the OS 'soon'.

Lots of PCs/ laptops will be getting the update anyway, via win update.
