Evening all,
Is it still possible to buy Windows 2000 Server? All I can seem to find these days is Windows Server 2003 which is complete and utter overkill for what I need a server OS for - plain & simple file serving.

Any help is appreciated.... thanks :)

In that case, running server 2000 is perhaps overkill. You could run an XP machine as a file server, which would be a more cost effective solution.

You could even invest in some Network Attached Storage, save paying for an operating system and then a machine to run it on. I'd research other solutions before making any purchases.

You don't really need to the spend money on a server operating system to provide remote storage to 4 clients.

Good point, hadn't even considered XP - in that case is Windows 2000 Pro still available?

The guy I'm investigating all this for, already has network attached storage which isn't really performing as well as he'd like. Which is why I'm looking into a dedicated server... See here for the full story.

Personally, i'd go with Linux. Which is 'free', leaving me to spend the £800 on a decent spec'd server. The OS isn't going to play a massive part in performance on a file server, so it would make sense to skimp on that and spend more on hardware.

Linux would be fine if this was a personal project, but I want to go with a Windows OS as he is familiar with Windows and could get by if he had problems- as opposed to Linux which he has never seen before.

I'm just thinking about the times when I'm not available to help if he hits a problem.

So back to my (nearly) original point - is Windows 2000 Pro still available to buy?

As far as I can see, there's very little difference (cost wise) between server 2000 and 2003. So, that wouldn't really be an option as it will nail over half of your budget.

However, XP Home is only £62.26 inc (OcUK). So you'd still have over £700 to play with on the hardware side. That's got to be the way to go.

Generally it's hard to get a Windows 2000 Server license, usually its a 2003 license and then you'll use the downgrade rights.
