Windows 2008 on VMWare ESX 3.5

Fonzee: Just sent you an email regarding the ML 115.

A lot of "large" companies are virtualising. One FTSE100 I worked for was over 75% virtual on 1000 servers.....

Is anyone running Server 2008 and ESX 3.5 and getting terrible performance?

There are a few similar cases on the VMWare forums but nobody seems to have a reason why?

Formatting disks is taking hours. 10+ mins for 18Gb disk, I daren't even start the 330Gb one going.

We have one box we use as a file server - 2008 on a DL585 G2 host, allocated 2 x cpu and 4gb RAM, all disk is SAN R10 with 14 spindles.
Performance is good, about same as 2003 R2.

We do have issues with it locking the server subsystem, allowing me to ping from it but not to it, only a VM reset fixes it...been 2 weeks since it last happened....LOL!

Not my decision unfortunately, local Govt and they want an excuse to try out 2008 :(

We have a couple of brand new R900 due sometime next week same spec as that which these 4x 2008 VM's will likely end up on so hopefully we won't have any problems once we stick them on there.

Hey i'm local gov too (well, contractor working with local gov) at a local authority not a million miles from Huddersfield.

We've got maybe a dozen 2008 VM's on ESX 3.5u3 build 143128 with no probs at all.

We've also got 6 or so Exchange servers, mainly passive nodes in mailbox clusters on Exchange 2003.

ps.

If you want a highly skilled and experienced MCSE / VCP to come on board from August for a few months just let me know ;)

BT have well over 2k servers virtualised (out of ~30k servers total so some way to go :) ), just did a 6 month gig with them.

Virtualisation really has exploded in the last 2 years !
