Hi Guys

my m8 said windows 32 bit is better then 64bit where i think 64 bit is best

this is on a gaming rig with a 955 4 gig of ram and a 6870

So what is better 64 or 32???

It depends. In the past, x64 could have compatibility issues with x84 software and since most software is written for x84 OS, that is most software. This is rarely an issue now unless you want to play an old game though.

x64 is better if you want to use more than 3GB of ram.

On a modern PC with what you have? x64 all the way. I have been using it since vista was launched and have never ever had a compatibility problem. The only issues I had were from Cannon, they never wrote 64 bit drivers for my scanner.

Some people's mates say some funny things. Some people know to come here and be set straight, but I often wonder about those poor souls who don't...

:)

Oh, the answer - no major reason to stick with 32bit anymore. If you really want to run very old games there are ways and means even if your main OS is 64 bit.

If you are buying a new copy of Windows 7 - then you want to get 64bit.

Most x86 apps run great on x64 win 7 and all drivers for modern hardware have a 64 bit version.

Crucially - 32 bit windows has a memory limit of 4GB. If you have 4GB of system memory and 1GB video memory then a 32bit OS will not be able to address all your memory. With 64 bit windows 7 HP the limit is 16GB.

64 bit Vista had some issues, now mostly resolved...So no reason not to get the 64 bit version of W7.

As above the 32 bit version is limited to something like 3.25 gig of RAM addresses in that version of the operatings system. I have games that use up 3 gig of RAM now...

An in the near future games are going to use more, say in less then 6 months....So 64 bit will be best for gaming and general ease of use.

Cheers

Von

64 bit, in the past there was a lot of driver issue like lack of support, but that has now changed from what I use. Well supported and you can use more than 3.5gb of ram.

So I would choose 64 bit everytime

192 GB is purely a Win7 OS limit for 64 bit as stated

the memory limit that 64bit could address is in the 8TB area - way beyond anything that need be a worry or concern to desktop/home users :)

Like everyone else has said 64bit.

Unless you're talking about XP (I don't believe you specified), to which I would say stick with 32bit.
The situation may have drastically improved but when I last used it it was hideously crashy, though this was probably down to woeful driver support.

Quoted for truth 64 bit XP had dire driver support.

Scary thing is - it will be a restriction some day! Only 1000x what we use today. I remember well the previous 1000x increase (and how much that 8MB cost me :() and even, just about (I was born at least), the 1000x increase before that. God I'm old :( :(

In this day and age when 4gb is a standard amount of Ram in a system 64 bit, it's the only way to go but has to be hand in hand with new os such as Windows 7.
