Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone was finding any real benefit or improved performance with Windows 7 64bit in comparison to 32bit?

What really benefits? I myself have installed 64bit and just about everything is running in 32bit compatability mode, and there is no difference in speed, if anything it feels a little slower?

My current mobo seems limited, it will not show a full 4gb of memory (see sig below for specs) so maybe it is dependent on what you use? But really, is there any reason to install 64bit?

Cheers,
Steve

The ram is the only real issue for me with the whole 32/64 debate. 32 limits you to 4gb total, 2gb per app. 64 bit is almost total unlimited ram, and upto 4gb per 32 bit app.

On the other hand there is no real reason not to go 64 bit, if your hardware is compatable, even with 4gb or less of ram (windows7, dont do this on vista :p).

Hi,

I have installed Win 7 and it is the 64 bit, it says so LOL, it shows 4gig but states only 3.25 as useable, and I have a 1gb Saphire Toxic 4850 installed too.

I thought I had read somewhere that this mother board was limited, I had to use a Bios update from the Treiber site to allow me to utilise 2 2gb sticks.

I have had a few apps performing poorly with Win 7, WinISD will not shut down, and has to be shut down via task manager, Firefox sometimes stops responding, and all my games are running in compatability mode and most if not all apps such as Avir are 32bit.

Hence my wondering what is the benefit of 64bit? If nothing seems to be 64bit?

You need to turn on memory remap in your BIOS.

64bit is the logical step to go to and 32bit should be completely avoided just so 32bit can die a peaceful death.

If your cpu is capable, use 64bit these days. I can't imagine you running into many problems at all.

The majority of people here (I'm sure) will be running 64bit now.

i'd get a new PSU, those Hiper TypeR 580w have a very bad reputation of blowing up

LOL :),

This Hyper has been running since it came out with no problems, as has my other non modular Hyper upstairs, both are old and well used.

Saying that I did intend some time back to get a BeQuiet 650w PSU, but something else came up...

And recently I was going to buy a new PSU for the upstairs PC, and again something else came up...

To be honest I will get a couple of new PSU's some day...

One of the reasons why I am wondering about 64 bit is that in this system I have seen no benefits over the previous 32 bit W7 os, and that this pc is going to be replacing the one upstairs, it will have the old HIS 3850 AGP card and probably 2gb of PC3500 re-installed.
