Windows 7/8 image quality vs XP

He was complaining about both:

On the same computer, multi booting between windows 7, windows 8 CP and windows XP the image quality is much better on windows XP.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a fix?

Where the text is pin sharp in windows xp, it is a bit fuzzy in windows7/8. It hurts my eyes working in win7/8 to be honest.

I did a bit of googling yesterday and found some answers which have improved things.

1. disable cleartype
2. change default font from Segue to Tahoma (Tahoma is used on xp)
3. disabled graphics card hardware acceleration in ie
4. not relevant to image clarity, but disabled all those annoying permissions nags when copying moving files.
5. installed classic shell

So you've turned off several of the usability and security advantages of Windows 7/8 and replaced them with the outdated methods used in a 10-year-old OS.

* Stick with the ClearType text for a week or two. It looks odd because you're not used to it. Non-ClearType text is ugly as sin in comparison.
* Why have you turned off hardware acceleration in IE? A significant performance and smoothness advantage.
* They're not annoying permissions nags. They're part of a security architecture vastly superior to that in XP. Keep them on.

I can't say I see much point in upgrading, then taking every step possible to replicate the old product within the new. You need to give this stuff some time, rather than immediately reaching for what's familiar!

Haters gon' hate.

PAIN!

Google-fu with windows tweaks tends to lead to several thing, including but not limited to; disabling half the os, loosing one of your nuts and discovering your aunt left you 500K in the bank of Nigeria.

i have to agree, even with clear type off on windows 7 or vista, xp is miles ahead. the text is just so crisp on xp.

(by the way, im using windows 7)

Thanks for your support.

I have had a win 7 laptop for about 18 months and have always found the text not as clear, even when connecting it up to the desktop monitor.

For those who work on their computer rather than play games/run benchmarks/brag about pc specs text quality is important to minimize eye strain and XP by default is clearer than windows 7/8.

I'm pretty sure Kaspersky will protect the pc without having the constant nag screens popping up. After all XP does not have those nag screens and it keeps it nice and secure.

I know it is important. I work on my ClearType enabled PC for 8+ hours per day. ClearType has been enabled on the XP machines in every office and educational establishment I've ever been in. The entire point is that it makes text easier to read because it's smoother and less aliased. Every modern OS uses similar technology, presumably based upon plenty of user experience research. I'm fairly sure your reaction is just because you're not used to it.

Not really true. Anti-virus performs a fundamentally different task to UAC. They are 'layers' of security and one can't replace the other. You need to read about the reasons for having UAC and what it does.

XP has a rudimentary security model compared to 7/8.
