Hi just wondering if anyone knew what the deal is with stuff windows 7 randomly deletes from the desktop?

My gf just messaged me in tears because she keeps everything on her desktop and its all gone. So far she's looked in the desktop folders, tried on desktop right click -> view -> show desktop icons, tried searching my computer for certain files. Nothing seems to be there anymore. I had a similar problem before with win 7 deleting so called broken icons, but I never had anything important on my desktop.

Google seems to give a few simple solutions from microsoft, but nothing seems to have worked so far.

Anyone got any ideas? Is it all gone, or will windows have hidden it somewhere?

Sounds like some kind of desktop cleanup wizard is running on a schedule. You could try using the likes of Recuva to get back any files which have been deleted although in the case of a cleanup wizard I wouldn't think the files would be deleted permanently.

There is a task that deletes shortcut icons from the desktop.

I have to replace mine every Monday morning.

I would stop the task but I have, as yet, not found out what other things it does.

Never lost anything else though.

Is she still logging on with the same user?
A different user will get a different desktop. Usual reason I see for things disappearing is between the chair and the keyboard.

Iv had this.. But the data is still there.. It just does not show the files on the desktop but if you go to c:\users\[username]\desktop the files are shown.. Never worked out why or how to get it back just windows will not show them.

I've had this before when the user profile gets corrupted and a new account directory is created automatically in C:\Users\Name.001 or something similar to allow a succesful logon.

If you look in there, hopefully the old User folder will still be there with all the docs etc.
