Strange one this:
I have Win7 64 Home Edition. Now everytime I set any directory to non read-only (ie blank the box that says read-only) it keeps reverting back to 'read-only' and thus I can't install anything anywhere.....
I am logged in as admin and where it says you need to be logged in as admin ete etc I click continue......

Any ideas what I'm missing

read only applies to files, not folders.

can you expand on this? what problems/errors are you getting?

Well for example everytime I install trillian it says it cannot read to or write to the directory (which I assume is where its installed - Program Files X86)

Also trying to install winamp onto my F: (Music) partition it says effectively the same thing
Stupidly I did let my brother install a PDF file-reader (????) and found this morning all sorts of junk on here. Did run AV sweep with kapersky but found nothing

Yes UAC is blocking it. The same happens with MPC (among other apps), in MPCs example, if you add a bookmark to a video you're watching the bookmark won't save because it doesn't have permission to write to the file that stores this info in the install folder. You can run the program as admin via the shortcut properties but it pops up a confirmation dialogue on each run.

Or turn off UAC.

I did the latter and all my gripes went away.

OK stupid question (or rather 2): what is UAC and where do you go in windows to switch it off??

The whole point of UAC is that the program is not allowed to make certain changes to the root directories. Its a very good thing to keep on, and should be left as is.

The fact is, its not windows thats the problem, its the application makers. They should be writing files like that to the users folders and not system directories. Its poor discipline as they cannot be bothered to code correctly.

To get to the menu, just type UAC in the search box in the start bar.

tbh yesterday it was all fine - today its all gone to pot.....
Sorry just twigged what UAC is and thats always been on.
Win7 re-install methinks.....

sorted now with fresh windows install
Apparently was missing "APPSDATA" which meant I couldn't install or un-install anything....
