My 64-bit disc is no longer working - got scratched by my cd drive when I had the pc on its side.

Can I get a replacement from Microsoft somehow without paying?

And no, I don't know anyone who could lend me a disk.

Download an ISO :D YOur paying for the serial when u buy windows 7 not so much the disc :) Thats what i did and have had NO problems with it.

That's retarded. Don't they print "DO NOT MAKE ILLEGAL COPIES OF THIS DISC" over them? People (well some) do this as a backup, if they don't want people doing this they should offer replacement discs free.

Probably best getting an ISO and using your legit code, etc

If you download from an illegitimate source you run the risk of downloading a frankenstein build or and ISO that's been tampered with in some way. If you choose that route make sure you can verify what you're downloading is untouched.

as cool as a frankenstein build sounds, a check of the MD5 hash can confirm if your computer is going to have bolts coming out of it's case or not! ;) :p

What you are after is probably this - try googling:

GRMCULXFRER_EN_DVD Ultimate

Microsofts hashes are:
Microsoft Windows 7 64 Bits

* MD5: F43D22E4FB07BF617D573ACD8785C028
* SHA-1: 326327CC2FF9F05379F5058C41BE6BC5E004BAA7
Have you ever thought that now you are using computers that email may be a good idea - just a thought!

Where's a legit site to download the ISO from? I don't really trust the torrrent sites.

Is it impossible for anyone to tamper those hashes? Basically, if it has the correct hash, that means it is 100% legit?

As long as you check the hashes after you download it before using it then you'll be fine mate and it's not illegal to download if you have a proper license. Unless you or a friend have an MSDN account I don't think there are any fully legit sites.

SHA1 was "broken" in theory by a Chinese team in 2005, but it would still require massive amounts of computer time to translate their research into a successful practical attack... if it's even possible at all, we're talking about the kind of horsepower available only to governments or major corporations, and I think it's unlikely they'd use their resources to post dodgy Windows ISOs on torrent sites.

So yes, if the SHA1 hash is correct, you have the genuine article. :)

You might also find this useful to change/remove the ei.cfg file, depending on which version of Win7 you have, and which ISO you download.

As far as I know there are no "legit" downloads of windows other than MSDN or other academic/corporate facilities. What you have to remember about torrents is that even if it is a legit copy with the correct hash you're still going to be sending sharing out a part of the file, which is not legit.

Buy a cheap cd/dvd cleaner some remove scratchs if they are not to deep.

THis guy used Brasso -

This was excellent. I remember my dad using Brasso to remove scratches from his plastic eyeglass lenses so I figured it had a good chance of working. But this worked great for me. On the two discs I tried it on, it returned them to their former glory. Very happy.
As I've said, don't try this on CDs that are 95% ok becuase I can't guarantee results. But if you have a highly-scratched, almost unplayable disc, you've got nothing to lose.

The hashes for the Home Premium 64-bit ISO I downloaded are

MD5: 758887088235024058D1C8EB6EFB85A8

SHA-1: 336779EA6B65F63E11A609B4D021439C47AB315B

Does that mean that this ISO has been tampered with and is unreliable?

The funny thing is I got it from a digitalrivercontent.net link which should make it a genuine copy, no? I'm not sure why those links are still active.

Hello Ivan Drago,

I would not recommend downloading Windows 7 from any other site than the Official Microsoft Sites.
Additionally, it's always best to make sure you have a genuine version of Windows 7, this will entitle you to recieve updates and support from Microsoft with Genuine Advantage.

Wooow!! its great to know that Mircosoft are aboard here. Perhaps you can give a link to getting a replacement pressing for a reasonable price - and who knows what other useful tips you have available for us all!
I bought a pressing of Vista for around £3 or £4 but this is no longer available

But hey you should not be advertising on here Microsoft's direct selling site as this site is run and paid for by a competitor. Wiindows 7 is cheaper at Overclockers than MS itself
