Ok this may be a stupid question but...

I'm about to install win 7 coming from xp and wondered how easy the install is?

By that I mean does Win 7 find all your drivers and install them automatically during setup or do I have to hunt them all down on the interweb and install manually?

Drivers include mobo chippsets, audio, graphics etc etc.

Cheers
Ferret

On the most part they will be built in, but I'd grab your wifi card and/or NIC drivers now while you still can just in case.

After install, you might want to get your graphics card drivers from the website just to be up to date.

On the whole yes it does find it by itself but I always find the best thing to do is either on another hard drive or USB stick to download all the latest drivers and keep them there just in case. On my nforce 680i motherboard the ethernet drivers that come with Windows 7 caused me issues so I did have to revert back to an older version. It found all my current hardware ok apart from the soundcard.

I remember once I think Windows XP wouldn't recognize my little green USB modem for ADSL which made connecting to the internet impossible as I didn't have the CD for my modem. So I couldn't even connect to the internet to get the drivers and had to go to a local internet cafe, download the drivers and then come back to install.

This is sensible. It should find most of them, but I know it doesn't like my wireless card. Make sure you have enough ready to be able to connect to the internet and grab any others if you need to!

If you can install XP you can install Windows 7, the installation process is a lot more simple. When I'm upgrading a PC or reformating this is what I do:
1) Backup all documents and anything important to an external drive
2) Download all the latest drivers for the new O/S and stick them on the external drive
3) Format the drive and begin the installation of new O/S
4) Install all the drivers from external drive.
5) Change settings to your liking and reinstall all applications
6) Replace documents

Welcome to Windows 7!

Chipset driver query...

I installed the Vista X64 chipset drivers for my Windows 7 install. Must admit I did agonize a bit over this, as to whether I needed (or should) do this.
