Just thought id add some more info.

installing windows 7 64bit retail onto a new pc.

I get the new windows 7 icon appear then the circled cursor spinning, then it freezes, i left it for 40 mins and nothing?

What other sort of hardware you got installed in the PC? Just a thought that it might be worth trying to unplug anything non-essential and trying again.

I presume you've already got a working OS (XP/Vista) on the old drive... i would personally unplug the IDE/SATA cable from the mobo whilst you install 7.

Edit: Just thought, might be a weak power supply which doesn't like having another drive installed and running, but not sure what make/rating you're using.

Another additional thought would be to try and download the Ultimate Boot CD and run memtest or the computer just to check it.

hello nade, and thanks for your reply

its a new build built only today

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P motherboard

XFX HD4890

corsair 650w hx

WD 500gb

Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 XMS3

This is what happens, i turn pc on and get the grey windows is loading files screen. Then it goes to the windows 7 is starting screen(the one with the four colours). Then i have just a blue screen with the leaves, a white bird and a cursor. After about 5 mins i get the option to select language and keyboard method this then leads to "setup is starting" the cursor turns for a while then the dvd drive makes a noise and the pc restarts again back to the "windows is loading files" screen

If the DVD drive is making a weird noise I can only imagine it could be a slight scratch on the disc? Do you have a spare DVDROM to use to try installing Win7?

sounds much like a bsod situation, but the machine is rebooting before you can see the blue screen message, could be a ram issue, have you got any sticks of ram that aren't new (from another machine maybe) that you could try, or try it with only one of your 2gb sticks.

hi davethe11,

i will try the one stick of ram.

im beginning to think i may have a bad windows 7 install disk, tried both 32 and 64 now.

It gets to the screen where it says setup starting then the dvd drive kicks in and the system reboots itself.

I may have confirmed its a dodgy windows disk,

I just started to install my windows xp disk and the hard drive was working fine but when i tried the windows 7 install again there is no activity from the hard drive. Is this a bad windows disk do you think?

Did you burn it yourself?

I think its a 64bit retail disk.

terrystar, I take it you tried one stick of ram, just in case that stick is faulty I would try the other stick on its own just to rule out a ram issue. It's possible it's the disk, but I would point the finger at hardware first.

ok, found some info here , just reading up, could be that your motherboard is setting the default ram voltage and timings incorrectly, gonna check your ram spec out...

ok, I'm a bit out of date on ram lol couldn't find them on the corsair website, did find some info but wasn't sure to trust the source and don't want to fry your ram, terrystar could you post a link to your ram so we can determine the timings and voltage?

[edit]really don't know if this is your problem, but it's an easy thing to try setting this manually (I like easy fixes)

your bios isnt set to auto boot from cd is it thus upon final boot its going back to where it thinks it is in the installation process?

Try going into you BIOS and setting the HDD to IDE mode.

I have seen what you are describing. In that particular situation the HDD was set to AHCI mode, when changed to IDE mode it worked fine.

Worth a go...
